My son (Singaporean) is 3 years old and he is now studying in a very good kindergarten which focus very much on the academic side (Putonghua and English stream).
My very first plan is to apply SIS this year and hopefully he can join PY1 next year.

I noted recently a comment from my friend (her daughter is studying in P2 in SIS now) that the PY times in SIS is very relaxing and not really focus on academic.
However, the school will be very pressing starting P1 (she quoted an example that SIS will complete teaching PINYIN (併音) in 8 weeks’ time in P1.
My friend could not recall that PINYIN (併音) had been taught in PYs stage under the subject of "Chinese language".
Hence, parents of P1 students in SIS must try very hard to help the kids).
Could anyone please let me know if that is true?

I am facing a dilemma now should I let my son to stay in the present kindergarten (PINYIN 併音 will be taught) till K3 and then apply SIS in P1 OR should I apply PY1 now knowing the chance of getting in SIS will be higher.
However, I really want my son to打好根基 in terms of his academic during his kinder times.

Many thanks for your advice in advance.

Apply for PY1 for sure. Holding a Singaporean passport will give you an edge. Moreover, if he is going there anyways, why not let him start early so he can get used to the learning environment there? SIS is no way a relaxing school. Homework load is definitely among the top ones compare to other international schools.

You should of course apply for PY1. Pinyin should not be a big problem to Singaporean parents as we all did that in primary school too and have been through the process.

I have my education in Hong Kong and hence, Pinyin is really a big concern for me.

I recall for my older son, i never put him to any extra tuition or assist him in learning pinyin, but he just grasped the concept naturally. So don't worry lah, if can get in, I think better to apply PY1.

Hi Sunflowersg, did you teach your son 'pinyin' yourself? Or he just pick it up from school by himself?
