Thank you for sharing. I haven't gone through the article in detail yet, but just by looking at the photos I noticed there aren't that many expat families there. I know many American families are in HKIS [20% of the AIS student body vs nearly 58% of the HKIS student body with US citizenship], with at least 1/3 of the school population in the graduating class being non-Asian. I wonder if it is simply due to the location of the school or are there other factors involved...

Just read through the article. Am impressed that the AIS school principal has been in HK for 22 years and his two daughters are both studying in AIS. That speaks volume.

Expats are defined as non-Hong Kong permanent residents holding foreign passports that include Asians from all over the world including America. If you go to a lot of schools and cosmopolitan cities in North America like New York, you will find a mixed of different races and not just Caucasians, that is a sign of true multiculturalism. AIS does not have a dominant American population like HKIS probably because they do not select students or give priority based on a certain nationality but purely on their performance in school and in the assessment and interviews.

Just a tip of finding out whether a school is truly an international school: Go to visit a school on a normal day (not during open house) and hear what language(s) the kids are primarily talking to each other when there are no teachers around and pay attention to their English accent too. ;)

Haha, back to the accent issue again (sorry we've been discussing that in another thread). You'd find that most of the International school students in HK simply has this mixed 'international' accent instead, even when the child's family is pure British or pure American. Of course it depends on the child herself as well.

I do not believe HKIS selects students based on their ethnic background either, perhaps simply because the school is located in the Tai Tam / Repluse Bay area with a concentration of non-Asians. That's all.
