My kid got an offer from sis for py1, and recently esf accepted him for k2 this fall, but they mentioned that there will be no interview priority for primaries (coming year is the final year for priority). My son's character is lack of self confidence and emotional, he avoids a task or challenge without even trying, especially on new thing or in new environment.

I believe Esf is a good school to build up his confidence. I feel very happy knowing esf accepted him. However, the feeling of fear keeps me stuck while I'm thinking of the priority system... Everyone in the kinder guarantee an interview's chance but him... Even he has interview, can he perform well within the few minutes? As mentioned, he is not the type of expressive and receptive child, at least comparing with other esf kids. SIS is a train through school, should I just give up my dream school and take the safety route?

Take SIS now and try for ESF primary next year. Without interview priority (plus given those in k1 this year still have it), the chance of him getting into ESF primary is the same as those in any other schools.

Also, SIS's IB score is 37 whereas ESF is around 35. (I know it's hard to compare since SIS had only thirty odd IB graduates this year whereas ESF has hundreds, but still it is quite impressive).

It is the age old question of whether we should find the child a school that suit the child's character (like SIS would suit your son), or one that help built his weaknesses (like ESF but he might have to struggle or feel uneasy in the school). I have no answer either but in HK it seem like we as parents are not the one to always have all the options.

I'd go for a safe option now and let fate plays out in the end.

Go to SIS. You can still apply for ESF Year 1.

i used not to ask people to do this or do that, but I would say it is unwise to change at the moment.
Changing school is not an easy task for 1 K1/K2 kid.
Without interview priority for ESF Year 1, your son has to adopt the new environment and prepare for the interview at the same time in a few month.
Without interview priority means your son will be in the same position when applying ESF Year One no matter your son is in SIS or ESF or anywhere else.
Taking a safety route does not mean you are giving up your dream school.
If I were you, I would stay in SIS and apply ESF primary (and your other dream school). Even if you are not granted an interview, you will be queuing on the waiting list and will be called for interview after a few years. Get well prepared while waiting and you dream can come true.

May I ask SIS is a high pressure school or not? As I know, SIS emphasis on both chinese and eng but ESF only in Eng, right?

Honestly, I'm not expecting a lot academically at the elementary stage, I dont want to go through the pain of high pressure on homeworks. That's why I'd prefer esf, but understand that I can't be blinded to the reality. It's really a tough decision...

Oooray, I agree your point of view, not to change toddler's environment too often.

Jolalee, can I know why you think sis suits my kids? No right or wrong, truly want to hear more opinions.

Given your description of your son: "lacks self confidence, emotional, avoids task or challenge without even trying, especially with new things or in a new environment, not expressive and receptive (at least comparing with other esf kids)" basically he needs order and structure to excel, and the Singapore curriculum would provide more order & routine compared with an IB inquiry-based curriculum.

Although you only mentioned the negatives, i suspect that once your child finds something he is familiar with, he attention span and concentration should be pretty alright? Kids who are less expressive may also be deeper thinkers, who require a more chalk & talk approach where they can sit back and observe, instead of requiring them to actively participate which hinders his observation / absorption of knowledge. Please do let me know if my reading between the lines was correct or not.

Furthermore, like what oooray said, it would take a while for your son to adapt to ESF, and it may not bode well for interview. His character cannot be changed within a few months, so it is better to keep him in SIS (i suppose he's been there for py1 and will go to py2 after this summer). You can still apply for ESF primary though. You lose nothing by keeping him in SIS in the mean time. Just ESF k2 without primary will do nothing much for him. If he gets into ESF primary, then the years of training to follow will help reshape him. Let fate decide in a year's time.

Honestly we as parents never know which path is the best for our kids; sometimes life plays out and perhaps what we have in the end turns out to be what's best for us all....

By the way, you can say I am bored by the topic or the topic is boring... but not ’bored topic’ (^-^). 最近学緊中文人常犯的英文錯処、這也是其中一個、共勉之！！我個女女都係対任何事都無信心的人、EE+　ESF　P６啦、性格都無変呀！！覚得入左ESF就会変成self confident,未必架！！　SIS学校咁好、吾洗唸啦、学校読書風気好、小朋友会跟住上架。

LOL. There are too many grammatical mistakes on this forum in general, that i almost stopped bothering to correct my own typos!! (From what i've observed, preposition and verb tenses in English are the weakest links for Chinese native speakers. For English speakers, i find 量詞 and text recognition to be the most confusing.)

Good point about school vs. character influence. As a parent to an older child, do you think a school with strict discipline can help a wild kid stay better focused, or an inquiry-based school help a shy child with self-initiation? When choosing school, should this be taken into account? Should we look for a school that fits a child's own character, or one that helps 'balance' him off?

Hm, should i open a new thread for this interesting topic...?

JOLALEE,我朋友個女係RC,是過度活躍、第一年個CLASS　TEACHER不是太有這方面的経験、結果我朋友同女女都非常辛苦渡過、中途還想転校添。　点知第２年、遇到個有経験老師who knew how to handle her, everything changed. 所以真係好難講！　Sorry, I'd better not hijack this thread.

fun, when he is engaged. He needs to feel there are people there who understand him.

Many parents (including me) have strong view on which school would be the best for our child... Your thread reminds me to be open-minded and avoid feeling that there's only one possible option for my boy. After all, i

t's the child who will be attending the school and not me.

SIS may be better than i think... of course, all schools have strengths as well as weakness.

It's not easy to make the "right" decision, just try our best to put our kids on a path toward lifelong learning.

I know this boy whose mom is Singaporean, so he has a Singaporean passport. Last year he couldn't get into py1 but this year he got into py2. I'm not clear about the placements in SIS (is there more spots in py2?), or if the kid was just not mature enough to get in last year, but at least that's one example of Singaporean passport holder child not making SIS (at least for a year).

他爸爸是什麼國籍呢？
舊年去見py2的時候，見到一個香港老家族的後人，爸爸是外國護照，媽媽是新加坡人。本來無留意，但佢仔著晒禮服好隆重，in完出來苦晒面話吾識...吾知有無收，但佢吾係國民，吾收佢吾奇。

我留意咗SIS好多年，識的國民，包括舊同事仔女、鄰居和我小朋友的同學，叻或吾係幾叻，都入晒。試過有in得差，學校叫家長去，逐樣同佢講，點樣可以幫小朋友改進，無話放棄你，祝你錦繡前程。

Your opinions are very impressed. Can' t believe your son is only 3-4 yrs old. I have taken 16 years to figure out how to observe children's mind , the most significant portion is always those part they didn't voice out. But still they surprise me at all times, and scare me sometimes.

It is a treasure you come here often to give support and sharing to parents. Good job.
