HKU - Bachelor of  Economic / Economic & Finance   

UCL (University College London) : Master of Engineering

Which one is better? Which one should we give up?

Did you check this program with HKIE?


Normally, UK BEng is acceptable to HKIE, sometimes 4 years MEng may not comply to Washington Accord. Call HKIE Membership office asap.

Thanks for your reply!
My son loves Maths & Physic and he can always gets good marks on these subjects.

Therefore, I think "Mechanical Engineering" is quite suitable for him.

However, we are not familiar with "Economics & Finance", is it also suitable for the one who loves Maths?

Which subject has a better career path in HK?

My nephew graduated from a similar programme (4 year MEng Mechanical Engineering) a few years ago, from IC, though.  He is doing quite well now.

No. MEng from UCL is a 4-year course. That means he can gain a master degree once he finished his 4 years study at UCL.

我認識的Mech. engineer 最理想都是畢業後入政府，入政府要香港牌（即HKIE member）,我所知回歸後 HKIE 已逐步唔認英國大學的degree，但英國大學畢業仍可考英國那邊的牌(大學那邊應有說畢業生有那學會承認），而HKIE 與英國那邊學會應該會有reciprocal agreement（當然具體你要check 返HKIE）,咁樣考香港牌雖然有點迂回，但也是可行的。如果唔入政府，私人公司，一般有英國牌都OK  , 但當然要在香港做嘢都係考番個香港牌好D.

我所知回歸後 HKIE 已逐步唔認英國大學的degree，＜HKIE 沒有唔承認英國學位，而HKIE跟全世界大部份工程師學會一致，跟Washington Accord 的要求，只要符合WA，HKlE便承認那個工程學士學位，只有小部份個別工程課程不承認而已。因為WA只應對BEng，所以MEng 要核實。＞

Unlike 1 year MSc, British 4-year MEng is usually recognized by HKIE. In the old days HKIE recognized Charactered Engineer status but now it seems engineers working in HK only could not directly register for the Member of HKIE after getting the CEng status.

HKIE has added the following rule starting from YYYY:
Applicants who have obtained their substantive training and experience in a jurisdiction shall apply for membership in that jurisdiction first...

Econometric, game theory, financial modelling, forecasting and engineering all involve maths.  It is not uncommon for those who studied physics or engineering to switch to economic and finance in postgrad.

樓主一直冇透露MSc定MEng。

就算lC的BEng都有些不符合WA，所以HKlE都唔承認，穩陣d都是問HKlE。如果在海外講工程，一定要問清楚。

UK usually offers 4 years MEng degree and 1 year MSc degree. Accredited degree for CEng is recognized by HKIE. Accredited BEng and BSc in UK are only eligible for IEng and therefore not recognized by HKIE as professional member. Just check the univeristy or the institution web site will know whether the degree is accredited or not.

He is now working in an engineering firm.  The last time he told me he was working on some infrastructure in Singapore (of course, as a "len").

After he graduated, he spent quite a few months in UK looking in vain for jobs.  But he found one not too long after returning to HK.  The present one is his second.

No idea about the job market in UK or HK now.

Civil is ok because of a no. of infrastructure and housing projects.  Other eng disciplines are not.

but HK still needs engineers for electricity companies, gas, lifts, MTR, airport authority, building maintenance. All these public listed companies needs engineers, is there a huge supply?
