Hi All, I'm in live in Sai Kung and my daughter is 9 months now. I want to find a playgroup that is near my house. Currently, I'm thinking about Woodland and Garden House. I quite like their teaching philosophy which does not force children to learn abc or 123 in their early age. They want them to learn through playing.

However, I believe Woodland and Garden House are quite similar. Does anyone have any opinion or have kids studying there?

Please kindly give me some advice!

Thanks!

回覆:Woodland or Garden House in Sai Kung?

My son is attending Woodland Sai Kung playgroup. He loves going to school very much. The teacher and the principal are very nice. As far as I know, Woodland playgroups are quite full. Call the school for a visit.

I have not heard of Garden House even though I have been living in Sai Kung for quite a long time. So I don't know much about it. See another thread about TKO nursery on this page. Some suggest other good preschools which offers similar playgroups in Sai Kung too.

Thanks Ichen for your sharing! Glad to hear that your kid likes to go to school which means Woodland is quite good. Yes, I have rung the director to organise a trial class tomorrow (Thu). Finger cross, hope my daughter will enjoy the class too!

To be more specific, Garden House is on the other side of Sai Kung (Silver Strand Road). Below is their website:

I like their teaching philosophy too!

Any other people have any comment on this school?

Garden House is a Waldorf approach school, here is an interview with the Principal of Garden House http://www.geobaby.com/articles/ ... are-waldorf-schools, you may take a look of it and understand more about their philosophy. Currently there are only 2 Steiner schools in HK, namely Garden House in Sai Kung and Highgate House (the Peak), generally they encourage learn thorugh play, and also focus on children's independence, self-caring skills and communication skills rather than just learning alphabets and mathematics at Nursery or Kindergarten. Moreover, the school won't teach writing, Steiner approach believe children under 7 years of age shouldn't learn any form of writing. If you'd like your child to have better adaptation in Primary school, parents may need to teach writing themselves. Although it's not a common curriclum in HK, there are many schools over the world using Steiner approach, there are even Primary schools and Secondary schools overseas.

Since there isn't any Steiner Primary school in HK, the Principal of Garden House is planning to establish a Primary school using Steiner approach and this would certainly allow more parents to understand their education philosophy, and she believes that more people in HK will assent this kind of education approach in the near future.

Woodlands is a traditional British school with good reputation and experienced teachers. My children were graduated from Woodlands some years ago and I found they enjoyed their school lives very much, meanwhile teachers were caring and knew my children's personality well, they had their special method to teach different types of children (eg: some are more active/talkative while some of them are quiet/passive). Their curriculums are structured and organized, there are different themes throughout the year. The school strike a right balance between Play and Knowledge, they arrange enough time for children to have free play and outdoor activities everyday, these are important elements of childhood, it's beneficial to children since they are full of energy and need to use them up, sports are good for both mentally and physically.

I used to have my child at Garden house too but I have recently realised that Waldorf approach (or Steiner approach) is intrinsically intertwined with Anthroposophy, a cult/religion/faith (however you wish to name it) derived from paganism, hinduism, astrology and occultism.  Rudolf Steiner created Anthroposophy himself.  While the Waldorf approach in nurturing pre-school kids has its merits and seemingly fits well in today's result-driven society, the very element that attracted me to send my child to the school is actually a direct and practical application of Anthroposophy, with the aim to prepare the innocent minds (children) to accept this 'faith' or realisation of being a true 'free human being'.

While I am all for free choice and freedom of worship, the problem with Garden House and in fact all Wardorf schools, it's that they never explicitly admit or state on their website that they have a role in promoting or instilling Anthroposophy into people.

I sincerely encourage all prospective parents to make an informed choice by researching the relationship between Waldorf education and Anthroposophy.  A simple Google search will lead you to information both for and against the Waldorf system.  Make your choices after you have seen the information for yourself.  Again, the school will be a godsent to some but a brainwash system to others.
