I think it depends on how hard you have worked on your baby. For me, my daughter is now almost 18 months old and she can read more than 30 English words and recognise 10 alphabets and can say "What's this?", "Thanks", etc.
So, mothers, please work hard. I believe babies are full of potential.
Using Flash cards is one of the methonds. There are many good materials in the shops. For example, some wooden numbers, alphabets, etc. You can let the babies touch. Besides, I have bought a set of alphabets and spelling games, for learning the phonics which are good. My daught can read A-Z, 1-20, and other words. But I think that it is not essential for every child to know how to read the words at their very young age. It is more important for them know how to name the things (according to some articles) in either English or Cantonese because it will facilitate them to communicate with others. And you can do more story-telling by your own voice which is excellent for the brain development.
Hi 馬媽媽,
thanks for sharing your experience! my baby is now 10 months and I'm not sure if he recognises things and words yet. But is it not until they begin talking that you can know whether they actually know whether they recognise the words and alphabets, e.t.c.?
are you a full-time mother? can you share how you teach your baby? I've bought a lot of books and the flash cards as well but I find that it's dificult to catch my baby's attention, esp with the flash cards.
