I’ve been following the debates on 中中/英中 in BK for quite a while. It seems to me the problem we are facing in HK is that so far we still can’t find any effective/efficient way to excel our kid’s English as well as Chinese. 英中's might have an edge over中中's in terms of learning English but in my view both are far from being satisfactory.

I think one of the problems is that we stress too much on the academic results for our primary students. For those who lag behind in English at young age naturally lose interest in the language. Once they lack motivation in learning English, I don’t think 英中's can help them much. Thus I believe中中's should have their place in HK for the time being.

As far as I know, in all English speaking countries, kids are first taught phonics and are encouraged to read on a daily basis. They may be asked to compose sentences or to write diary even before they learn to spell correctly.

Well in HK, we have dictations, flash cards, grammars and lots of lots of written homework and practice. These aren’t interesting things at all. Primary students who score full marks in dictations and exams do not mean they are good at the language. We all know that many of those students who are really good at English actually have tuitions after school. This reflects the inadequacy of our present school system.

To me reading and phonics are more crucial for future development.

If say, from K1 to P3 we first forget about the marks and rankings. And everyday at school, if the kids can spend half a lesson watching English (or PTH) movies and use the remaining half lesson to learn phonics and reciting sentences with correct/accurate pronunciations and intonation, or even include some conversations or discussions, the results will be far more promising.

Once the kids have developed the interest and natural response to the language then we can start teaching them grammar and spelling at later stages.

I am not an expert in education or in any language. There should be many other better ways to learn English. If we can find a more efficient way for learning, then中中/英中will no longer be an issue to be worried about.

Your view is 100% correct. That is the approach my son's school is using. Written Chinese and English only starts at later stage, Grade 2 or 3 (=Primary 1 to 2 ). This seems ridiculous to many parents in Hong Kong. In BK, some parents even criticized this approach leading to ' 文盲 ' .

HK educating system put too much emphasis on '量', rather than '深度' . In BK, you can see that many parents want their kids know 1,000 words at baby stage, or trilingual. To me, this goes too far

我覺得呢個題目很好，但唔知點解，只有咁少回應？

唔通之前既聰明仔老爸講得太好？定係一句講晒：實行閱讀法至緊要早？

學習英文, 重要問題並不是是於學校教育, 而是香港本身實在太少英文語境可讓學生運用. 反過來想,一個在香港長大的英國人,從小開始家裏的溝通語言是廣東話, 在普通中小學讀書, 身邊的朋友都是中國人, 唯一使用英文的地方是課堂, 這個英國人的英文水平和英國本土學生有沒有分別. 肯定差很多, 但中文水平一定比在英國讀中文的英國人高很多.

學習一種語言,多運用多接觸,是不二法門, 誰多運用多接觸, 他的水平自然會高, 不能只靠學校每天一小時的英文課.

香港的學生學英文,不是學習他們的第二語言, 其實只是在學習外語, 語境只比日文法文好少少.
