Hi hugub,
Actually I don't want to comment too much (so can leave this to other parents to share) but since you mentioned your daughter like to stay in TL, may be I can share some of my views to you.
Honestly, Heep Yunn is certainly a good school particularly when you consider its location on the Kowloon side. Let's be frank the number of popular gov't aided girls' schools are limited there.
In my mind, True Light is also a good school but it being on the Hong Kong island would probably make it less popular as there are just so many choices on this side. But that doesn't make it a school any less good. Moreover, since it is rather low-profile so parents won't talk as much about it.
Alright, so how should you consider? There are few things that you can make your call:
(1) TL would be private primary and then gov't aided secondary, while Heep Yunn is changing to DSS secondary with primary remains as gov't aided (at least for the time being). In my personal view (well obviously) I prefer private primary and gov't aided secondary. The reason I said that is because under the allocation policy in Hong Kong, your kids would have a more preferable environment. Let me elaborate further.
Although usually about half of the kids would go to TL primary from the kindergarten section. However, your girl is familiar with the environment and honestly, families sending kids to private primary are more prepared to a particular school. Due to the allocation system, you would never know what students you would have in a gov't aided school which may cause trouble to the learning environment.
Why this become less an issue in secondary school? It is because simply the S1 allocation is related to academic merits. So, the learning differences would be smaller as compared to primary schools. Of course in a DSS environment, the school would have total control on the admission, but with the pressures from DSS schools like DGS, I can say schools like Heep Yunn may have to give in some days to take in students with special ability to keep up with the competition. (Ying Wa is doing more and more sports related recruitment nowadays).
(2) For sure, Heep Yunn will continue to be one of the schools under spotlight while True Light will not. This doesn't mean either school is better but that's just how the fact due to the different publicity policies. This is an area which you need to consider for one which is suitable for your family.
(3) As contrary to choose kindergarten, I would have to say kids nowadays are more mature so they are aware of the change (different from pre-nursery -> kindergarten). Obviously TL girls are usually big girls so this is quite certain. More to that, you mentioned your daughter actually have preference so parents' support during the selection must be considered. Don't just make a decision without consulting your child. I still remember my parents didn't consult me and I wasn't happy with their selection for me back then for primary school. So, don't say they won't know. I am sure there will be many kids who won't remember this, but you need to bare the risks if they do.
At the end, both are good schools honestly from the heart. And I would congratulate you and your family again for being blessed to make such a difficult choice! Good luck!
Ian
