My wife speaks to our child in Cantonese and speak to him in English since he was born. This couples with a year of International PN. He can understand and speak both languages quite ok. In fact, you may experience difficulty to start with but children adapt the environment very quickly.

However, he tends to watch DVD and read books in English, that's the cons as we normally only show hi, the English one. For the kid's reasoning, the said environment degrades their reasoning skills a bit to start with but hopefully getting better when they grow up.

At least, my son is not afraid of English speaking people.

For interview, you're correct that teachers only use Cantonese in most of the schools and of course, English may be used in international KG. KCN's is a good example but the coordinator would ask you what language do you want to be interviewed for your child. Anyway, dual languages have advantage as time goes by. I start to realize we did it right to talk to our child in dual mode when he turns to 3 years old.

播多d英文CD比孩子聽,等佢自學,好似經常有外國人同佢講嘢敢。間中播英語DVD比佢睇,揀d圖畫和文字嘅內容,孩子會好快上手學會。

我囝囝6個月左右,有專家教我用這種方法,到1歲適講話時,佢自己有時好自然講吓英文又會同我哋講吓中文,在語言好有幫助,認字認圖樣仲快,試試幾有效!

Yes, DVD in English helps a lot but we only reserve certain time schedule for my child to watch it. In Australia, it becomes illegal to let children watching TV with age below 2 years old. There must have a side effect for this such as lose of study concentration.

In fact, I speak to my child in English and my wife in Cantonese so as his grand dads grand moms and other relatives.

To be honest, we worried a bitmas he didn't speak much before 2 years old but it seems no problem at all after that.

Actually, I only say 'Doggy' to my child. We skip the words like Dog-Dog or Meow-Meow or 牛牛 since he was born.

For listening, we normally play him English or pure music. I remember our school gives him a VCD about brushing teeth. Since he needed to attend K1 interview at that time, we started to play him that VCD in Cantonese as interview was in Cantonese. He seems to take it up quite quickly.

Now, when my friends bring their children out, I try to speak with their children in English, they can nearly understand it. I believe this all depend what you would give to your children to start with but has to keep it up. Initially, other relatives rejected what I did to my child but they seem to know the advantage now.

响大仔未識講嘢前，我主要用英文，老公用廣東話！到佢用英文無乜問題時 (約18mth) 我就改廣東話，英文留返俾工人講。
大仔用英文考SC，用廣東話考KV, 兩間都係am offer(講明唔考慮pm)。

For myself, I still stick to use English to my child. I personally don't rely on helper as my helper really learns Cantonese so quickly as many or my relatives are speaking Cantonese to her. Then, my helper sometimes communicate to my child in Cantonese !!!

I just can't trust helper but you know, working parents usually have limited time to children...can't help that's why I keep my English to my child and he's now 2 years and 10 months.

我們是全廣東話的，但每日都讀英文故事書，另外上英文班。如果想考心儀幼稚園，我提議你多D帶小朋友出街，去公園去 Library，見多D人，平時同佢多D傾偈陪佢玩，一定有幫助。

其實我都想講，入唔入到心儀學校，同小朋友講唔講到流利英文唔係太有關
反而，小朋友嘅臨場表現更重要！
