Can any parent share what changes you can observe from the child from before to after going to Montessori courses? I know it stresses on the natural development of the child on his own, but is it effective? and what benefit do you get?

Thank you in advance.

Montessori emphasizes on self-discipline, self-motivated and self-care ability.  It divides into 5 areas: Sensorial, Language, Cultural, Practical life and Mathematics. The infant toddler aged between 1 to 2 years old focuses on the area of sensorial and practical life because the children in this stage mostly use their hands to touch and explore towards their development and their hands are very sensitive and easier for them to remember the things.

Starting 2, the children start to talk and recognize different shapes and colors so that children could learn the area of Cultural and Language.  Mathematics will be the last part but also depends on the progress of the child himself.

For example, my son firstly moved some marbles with a watermelon scoop from one bowl to another or opened the lids of some bottles. These would help him use the spoon and open the door lock. These exercises belong to the Practical Life. The stuff used in the Practical Life is really practical such as cloth clips, wiping the mirrors, moving beans and even putting the toothpicks into the toothpick stand. You could use anything in our daily lives to train our kids.

The nods cylinders is his favorite game and this belongs to the Sensorial.

Since my son is a fast learner, he learned the numbers 1-30 when he was 20 to 22 months old.  He really could speak out the sequences and recognised the Roman Numbers.  He also learned to count from 1 to 10 at the same time.

My son could also pronounced the alphabets from A to Z and even the phonics because Montessori teachers did not pronounce A as 'A' but "ah", B as "ba" so that the children could learn how to make up the words when they listen to the teachers. Thus, I don't have to pay extra money to take my son to study the phonics class because he already learned it from his Montessori teacher.

My son now could wear socks, shoes, jackets, pants and even diapers on his own but unfortunately he doesn't want to go to the toilet without using the diapers. He could eat the rice and food with a spoon and fork on his own when he was 20 to 22 months old without our assistance.  He will tidy up his toys after he finishes.

I also have one set of Montessori products at home which is the same set used at school. This is called "prepared environment'.  I keep on taking the recurring workshops provided by the school to learn more about Montessori.

In a nutshell, I love Montessori much more than Shichida and other PG since it allows my son to explore and learn more than I thought.

The most important part is which 'real' Montessori School you allow your children to study.  Do you plan to have a prepared environment to your children no matter they stay home or go to school???

Hope these could help.

PS. I emphasize that I am actually not part of their staff and simply a mother for a 2-year-old boy.  I love this teaching method and wanna more people know about it.  I felt bad about the teachers and parents in Hong Kong mostly have the wrong perception about Montessori.

Good to know some other parents like Montessori teaching too. I am researching which Montessori playgroup is good in Hk island. Do you have any recommendations? I also have the whole set of Montessori educational tools at home as a Montessori corner for baby.

Ackl1002, montessori is a learning method which emphasizes on nurturing the child slowly, so there is no immediate result.  Some children will fit Montessori better than others, but a toddler program will probably help most children.  Academically (usually starts to pick up between 3 to 4), not every child will blossom.  For those who goes Montessori ALL the way and if the child does fit their way of teaching,  you will be astonished by the progress by 6 years old.  Of course, you need to provide a consistent approach at home.  E.g. if the child picks up his own things at school, and a helper/parent does it at home, it probably doesn't help.
