I know it may depend on the school and the competition that year, but can anyone provide any guidance on how many points one need so as to almost secure a place in the first roudn discretionary allocation? 20? 25?

it depends on which school !

some 25 , some 20, some 15, and some even lower !

My son got a place in La Salle Primary School last year in the first round with 25 points. I think 25 points can guarantee a place.

我仔亦是25分首輪入灣仔華仁小學，聽講咁多年以來25分都收晒，20分要抽籤。
