My daughter has received offer from True Light 真光Primary School and St Clare 聖嘉勒 Primary School. How to compare between the two schools and which one is academically better? Which one has better English standard?

英文教學聖嘉勒小學有絕對優勢

聖嘉勒小學有直屬中學：聖嘉勒女書院（EMI津中），香港真光中學（小學部）有聯繫中學：香港真光中學（EMI津中）

直屬中學＝最多可收其直屬小學的85%學生
聯繫中學＝最多可收其聯繫小學的25%學生

英文教學聖嘉勒小學更有絕對優勢：小三起教學全英語（中文科當然例外）

功課量、成績可謂兩者差不多，校舍以香港真光中學（小學部）較大、設施較好。

The fact of the matter is:

1. For  St. Clare Primary School, more than 80% to 85% of the P.6 girls there would actually admitted to  St. Clare Girls’ School through the "feeder school" (直屬中學) arrangement, without any need of interviews and central allocation. The other 15-20% would opted for still better girl schools, such as St. Paul Co-ed, DGS, Marymount, St. Paul’s Covent etc. through discretionary stage, which are mostly done by interviews and are not district-restricted.

2. For  香港真光中學（小學部）, 25% of the P.6 students there would admitted to 香港真光中學through the "nominated school" (聯繫中學)arrangement, again without any need of interviews and allocations. While another 35% would be able to go to the 香港真光中學 through discretionary stage (need interviews) and central allocation. With the other 30% go to other schools through (again) the discretionary stage (need interviews) and central allocation, 20% are better than香港真光中學 while 10% are worse.

So you can see that, for school such as St. Clare Primary School that has a feeder school (直屬中學), more than 80 to 85% of their P. 6 students can go directly to Form 1 of St. Clare Girl’s School  “WITHOUT” any need of interviews or central allocation. While for school such as香港真光中學（小學部）that only has a nominated school (聯繫中學), only 25% of their P.6 students can do so, with the others having to go through the discretionary stage (need interviews) and central allocation.

So you see, although at the end of the day 69% of the香港真光中學（小學部）did managed to go to 香港真光中學, most of them has to go through the discretionary interviews and central allocation to do so. While those P.6 students at St. Clare Primary School can go to their feeder school St. Clare Girl’s School directly, and only need to do the discretionary interviews if they opted for still better school.

So even for the sack of「騎牛揾馬」, St. Clare is the better choice.

I understand the whole system itself is a bit complicated, but it has to be examine in this realistic manner and not oversimplified to just viewing the school lists from this 2 primary schools, or else you will miss a whole lot of opportunity when making choices.

That is much clear to me now. Thanks for you all. Orginially I thought it is similiar chance to go to their own secondary schools. Now, I have noticed the difference. At St. Clare, it would skip the trouble for the interviews of P1 application as anyway, a seat at its secondary school is better secured. English standard would be better at St. Clare. But the school environment is not as good as that of True Light.

Do any one know how to find the F1 allocation result of St Clare Primary? I can't find that from their school net. Thank you..

Dear KK07

I have mentioned those St. Clare's F.1 admission result already on the message I posted before. But I guessed you must be the kind of person who must "seeing is believing" by your own self, right?

OK, then I would tell you: those information were provided by the principal of St. Clare Kindergarten and St. Clare Primary School, Ms Dora Poon, to all of the attending parents during St. Clare's primary admission and kindergarten admission talks through a powerpoint slide.

So either you can still be skeptical about whether I somehow without any plausible reason should lie about this, and kept digging around in forums and internet about this result you would believe,

Or you can waited until next year and go to St. Clare's admission talks and listen for yourself in person.

Or you can take this as an prudent reference, and moved on to understand more about different schools and how the system really work, such that you can formulate the best path for yourself and your kids in pursuit of a brighter future.

Take your pick.

Hi kermitan, no offence, but I am really the type of person who must 'see' the figures and facts before making a decision. I absolutely don't believe you lie about this. However, as I am facing the same situation, St Clare vs True Light, I'd like to get a clearer picture before making the decision.

I agree yr analysis which I already got it after digging around nets and forum. The only thing I want to clarify is the path of their P6 students. Anyway, appreciate yr initiative to help.

Understood.

I would suggest that you should call up Ms Dora Poon to verify about what we heard from the parents' talks. That should be the most authoritative source of facts about their Form 1 allocation in your case.

And, I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that, for 2009, how many places for each of the nominated / feeder schools we talked about here were still left opened after the feeder school / nominated school arrangements, the discretionary stage (interview, and non-district based) and the part A of the central allocation (non-districted based).

Actually St. Clare's Primary School posted the SSPA result at around July 10,2009 which is only a few days after the release of the result. (I have also posted this information in under the thread of "St. Clare's Primary School" in "小學一覽" in similar time.

I don't know whether the official school website will archive this for parents' notice. Anyway, hope the information given can be useful to you.
