Re: 請問有 無人認識保良局蔡繼有學校或子女正就讀些校,這校程度如何及好不好嗎?
Thank you for providing a very interesting case for discussion. As you said that the boy had memorized the spelling of ‘bird’ two months ago but then after a lapse of two months, he simply forgot what he had learnt before. This case illustrates very clearly the difficulties in learning some unrelated things like an animal with wings that can fly and some symbols: ‘b-i-r-d’ which denotes that animal. You can see the arbitrariness between the two.
How to solve the problem? In my old days, we simply had dictation every day and if there was any single mistake with our spelling, we had to correct the word for a hundred times until we could memorize them by heart. However, there was still no guarantee that you would remember it some time after. Then we discovered a little trick that helped us the way to success, which was, to memorize everything before the examination, got a credit or distinction for that and forgot everything afterwards.
For decades, it worked until the financial crisis a few years ago. Suddenly university graduates are no more the cream of the society. People with master degree or even people with IT and Internet background might still find it very difficult to find jobs for some time. For a second, everything turns upside down. There is a mismatch between what our students have learnt and what the employing society needs. Then some of the parents realize that things have changed and what worked in the past might not work in the days ahead. I think this might account for some of the parents including me who choose CKY School for their children.
To get back to the ‘bird’ case, let me quote the guidelines for parents on spelling issued by CKY School, which says: ‘Please do not ask your child to memorize the words by rote or mechanically copy the words. These methods do not promote long-term memory and often cause students to become bored and disinterested with the material. Activities and games are much more effective in ensuring that students not only know how to spell the words, but are also able to understand and use them in their school work and daily life.’ These include: Rainbow Writing/Bubble Writing, Charades, Finger Tracing, Newspaper Letters, Wacky Sentences, More Sentences, Macaroni Writing, Word Detectives, Increase the Volume, Funny Voices and Flashcards.
In your friend’s case, may I suggest that he/she could talk with the class teachers to know more about the kid and to see what can do to help. It will always be very useful if parents could afford to take a morning break from work and join the ‘Parents Observation Day’ at school to see what’s happening to kids during the lesson, how they learn at school and how they interact with others.
