Hi heiB,
Let me tell you my experience of learning Putonghua.
When I was around 7 years old, I started to learn Putonghua, around 1-2 lessons every week. At that time, the teacher gave me some Chinese articles, some from textbooks and some from newspaper. She taught me to read but without teaching me piyin. I learnt piyin much later.
My son is now 6 years old and has learnt putonghua since 4. His school uses Putonghua to learn Chinese starting from P.1 (he is now studying in). The teacher teaches him piyin, and he can master it, of course with regular practice at home with my assistance.
I find that, in my case, if the teacher taught me in early stage, I might not be able to master it. But my son can at this age. The reason, according to my observation, is that my son's English standard particularly phonics skill is much better than me at same age.
My conclusion is that it is ok to allow your kid to learn piyin at around 6 years old. She can learn it quickly. I would prefer 1:1, which is much effective and more focused, if money is not a concern.
