LOOK FOR A RELIABLE PRIVATE SPEECH THERAPIST, ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? URGENT NEED!

Dear parents,

I want to check any info about the cost fee regarding the private speech therapist as the waiting list from Heep Hong Society is until July for private training.  However, I want to train up my girl more quickly (her main problem is weak in communication and social skills after assessment) and therefore want to check about the cost see whether I can afford or not.

Can anyone kindly refer a responsible private speech therapist to me?  Please urgent PM to me.

I'm just back to HKG after business trip. I have a list of private therapist which I got it from HKG speech therapish association. I will send it to you tomorrow. Just let me you you fax no or e-mail address.


fyi, the fee is around 400-600HKD for each visit of 45-60min, some therapist recommande an assessement for the first visit cost around 600-1000HKD.

因為係同行，有D又識得，唔係咁好意思亦唔適合話邊個好D，其實搵ST同睇醫生一樣人夾人緣，而且每人的價錢都唔同呢。個人覺得好的ST係比個心出黎做的，就算個小朋友教左幾次都進步唔明顯，都會好努力咁改變下D方法睇下會唔會有效，重唔會斤斤計較。你不妨自己判斷下啦。
希望你小朋友會好快有進步啦。

Hi, Hoeve,

What about you?  will you provide training as well?

I just called a centre but I don't like the response from their staff as all concern about is money with very strict time constraint.

Please don't mind telling me some more by PM as I need your help indeed.  You know, I strongly feel that my girl has not got a big problem at the present.  The critical she needs now is to switch on her expression light bulb from her mind.  Once it is connected, with lots of vocabularies that she has already grasped and she will have no problem to communicate with others then.  If I let the current situation continues, her case will become worser and worser.  

I just do not want to waste time and see whether how much I can afford before getting a place from Heep Hong Society.

Can you please PM me the centre that you called, so that I can avoid it?  I am trying to get my girl assessed.  We have seen the nurse at the government clinic and they said we needed to wait for 6 mths for doctors to do the real assessment.  As we don't want to waste 6 months' time, which can be so critical for a small child to learn so many things, we decide to get private service.

My 3 1/2 year old son is also having speech therapist to follow his case.  He is enjoying gov't benefit by going to 大口環 and getting private turtor at Step Center.  The private one to one speech therapist fee is around $350 per half hour.

Try to call 2899-2993.

After half year of training, he is improving a lot.  From speech delay of 11 months to now no delay in speech.  (But, he still has delay in concept & follow instruction).  Anyway, I believe their centre help me a lot.

Unfortunately, one of their specialist is going to deliver her baby and will be out of the centre for 4 months.  You may have difficulties to make arrangement with them.

Another center which I know is call 青蔥 Tel: 2393-7555.

Have you daughter got examination to confirm her case yet ?

I called the one at Mongkok Centre but I need the service for speech therapy training not assessment.  But anyway, those kinds of private training center also will have assessment service to provide.

CY-ma,

My girl is assessed for autistic like but her case not serious and that's why the doctor advised her to have intensive one to one training in order to catch her up to the required communication and social skills.  She has no problem in discipline or attention as she is now studying at a normal nursery from which the class teacher commented that her performance is still ok but a bit of cool to other classmates.

I already enrolled for Gov't Service but which requires me to wait at least half year to receive training.  On the other hand, I enrolled the Supportive Learning center from Heep Hong Society as well for private training as I think the waiting list will not be too long.  Before being offered by the private training from Heep Hong, I don't want to waste time so that's why I need a ST for 1-2 months to train my girl.

你的想法跟我是一樣, 因為我囝囝都是同一情況(他現在3歲), 在排了4個月見專科醫生後知道還要再排半年才等到政府位, 當時我都決定先私家再排政府. 囝囝是由2003年1月開始排見專科, 到2004年3月排到政府位做治療, 總共是14個月, 而我是自己俾了半年的言語治療(協康會一堂50分鐘, 每堂$500), 一個星期上一堂, 一個月大約是$2000. 但我覺得錢是花的值, 因為囝囝的進步是很好, 及追得很快.
我本人覺得協康會的服務不錯, 而且它還有書籍及玩具免費借出, 而囝囝的言語治療師亦很專言, 每次上堂都能令囝囝多講一些字.協康會亦提供評估服務, 價錢由$350 - $500. 你可以去它的網址 www.heephong.org.hk裏的青蔥計劃查看.

Yes, you are absolutely right.  Don't waste your girl time.  Instead of spending money to buy beautiful dresses to your daughter, just spend money for her development.

For me, I went to both 雅蘭street and 大口環兒童醫院, I found that the tests provided by 大口環兒童醫院 were more complete.  Personally, I will advise to line-up at 大口環兒童醫院 as you cannot enjoy benefit from both health centre.

Also, as far as I know 青蔥 is a name of the plan and it is same with HeepHong.

香港劲联协会 (Sorry i don't know how to type the third and fourth words, hopefully you can guess)
(price 1.5 years before ): 9 sessions in a package, each session $350

speech therapist there is good. It's in Lok Fu.

Hi gigi2,

Just would like to share with you that we finally cancelled the assessment with Speech and Language Centre because it is on the HK side and far away from our home.  Instead we had an assessment with Widex in Yaumatei/Jordan, the same centre where my girl took the hearing test.  Since we didn't have actual experience with any therapist except for talking over the phone, we just tried it out, choosing the one that is nearer to us and cheaper ($400 for 1 hr assessment vs. $880, $400 for half an hour training vs. $440).

I had talked to the speech therapist there asking for info., checking her attitude in terms of patience to explain their service, training given to kids and testing her level of English.  She was patient and kind enough to explain many details although her English over the phone was not too impressive.  We had the assessment yesterday and her English was much better than over the phone.  She was nice and knew how to handle small child.  

Parallelly, I have been talking to the teacher of the playgroup where I sent my girl before, HK Christian Service.  They also have Early Training Centres sponsored by the Gov't.  They also noticed the speech delay of my girl and were already planning to refer her to their ETCs.  Now they would arrange for their speech therapists to give private training for our girl.  (no time to wait in the gov't queue.)  Timing is flexible like afterwork or Sat and Sun. The cost is $400 for 1 hr session.  But since kids may not be able to focus on the training for so long, the last 10~15 mins. may concentrate on teaching the parents how to train the kids.  We would also try this out to see whether it works.

Just like what I say before, since we don't have any prior experience with any of the therapist, we just have to try out to see whom will be a better match for our girl.  We expect that it would just take max. 2 or 3 sesssions to know with whom should our girl train with.

I have another question.  Why do you give occupational therapy for your child?  What is it for and what are the benefits?  Does it help for kids with short attention span?

It was a story…

No need to mention the long queue for Government training, even the private training from Heep Hong requires us to wait as I need the therapy training on Saturday afternoon.

Via a help from one BK mommy, an OT was recommended and I found her to be professional and did the assessment for my little sweetie.  My girl needs speech and fine motor training and all these training requires her to be more attentive first.  OT training can also improve her in the area of better attention span.  

First priority is of course the speech therapy training as she has speech delay problem.  However, we cannot waste time on the confirmation of Saturday therapy training for speech from Heep Hong Society.  Also, the Occupational therapist will provide training at our home and therefore we decide to let things go as the first paediatrician at Hospital also referred my girl to have OT and speech therapy.

By the way, can you please tell me the contacts of speech therapist see whether I can arrange the speech training asap on Saturday afternoon!  Please PM to me and thank you for your help!

i know a speech therapist willing to go to your home to give training (but should fit her area).  It costs about $500 for 30-45 min training (i just get information indirectly)
