I took the teacher's training course distance learning from MCI, previously St. Nicholas Centre, supervised by Maria Montessori herself before her passing away. The course requires assignments, exams and 2-week on-site intensive training. Although it is very demanding, it is definitely worthwhile.
When I read the BK postings about Montessori education and materials, I really appreciate how hard MCI has been trying to up hold a very high standard. There are just too many companies wanting to cash in on the name of "Montessori" like Montessori flash card, Montessori learning DVD, Montessori this and that.
While it is nice to know so many parents are interested in the Montessori method, it is also sad to know that they know little about the lock-step sequence of the "apparatus" used in the Montessori classroom, not to mention how important it is to use the"right" apparatus.
For instance, the "family" pack Montessori materials sold in many Taoboa stores only immitate the "appearance" of the authentic Montessori apparatus. I have seen too many sandpaper letters that are made wrongly - the correct ones should have 2 colors - one color for the vowels and another for the consonants. Since the Montessori language curriculum has already built in phonics and grammar learning, there is no need to buy any more so called "Montessori phonics" or any grammar materials.
When I used my Montessori language apparatus to train working adults in grammar, they were amazed how wonderful and easy it is to figure out and remember the rules.
I personally advise choosing a course that can help you learn not just the "surface" of the Montessori method, but the true spirit of Montessori.
