My husband and I are returnees from the US. We grew up in the HK local system (band 1 local schools in hk) and spent more than half of our lives in the US. We speak fluent English between ourselves and with our kids. Our girl is turning 3 next year and we are contemplating whether to have her do the local system or the international system. We are christians and we hope that she can go to a christian school.

How easy is it to switch "back and forth" between international vs. local system? How do the english levels compare between international kindergartens (e.g. ESF Abacus/ICS) vs. local kindergartens with very high English levels (e.g. St. Cat, CCKG)? If she goes to an international kindergarten (e.g. ESF Abacus/ICS), is there any chance she can get into a local school with very high English level (e.g. DGJS)?

We visited ICS and we really like the christian based education there. But we are worried that its academic is not as rigorous as a good, band 1 local school. I am also worried about the peer groups in international schools -- that everyone will spoiled kids from rich families due to the high tuition and debenture requirements. (somehow, that's the impression I got when I was growing up in the local system, no offense to anyone) On the other hand, we are worried that if we send her to a cut throat local kindergarten with high academic standards, that in case if she can't get into the top local schools with very good English standards, then her English level will deteriorate. To us, having her speak good English is very important. (By good, we mean achieving native fluency). We would like her to speak good Cantonese and Mandarin as well but its ok to us if she is more comfortable communicating in English.

Any ideas? What kind of kindergartens should I look for? Help!!
