My son finished kindergarten in US, and then we switch to local P1 when we come back HK. In the beginning, it is quite tough esp in Chinese as he was very behind in Chinese. However, since it is english primary school, he is very strong in other subjects and take care them easily. For our case, he doesn't even know chinese and he now does very good in school. P1 chinese would not be too hard to catch up.

Thank you for your comment. I want my daughter has a good foundation in English. Although the local kindergarten may have foreigner teaching English class, but still not the best way to practice English.

my friends' kid and my kid change to local K3 and can speak fluent cantonese and write chinese such as "police', "hong Kong"..etc now.
The challenge is some DSS P1 conduct interview in Mandrain and chinese in the first term of K3.

He is in English primary schools, only chinese, mandarin, bible and computer are in Chinese, all others (English, science, maths,etc) are English.

True, good English primary schools are usually very full or hard to apply, not many choices. We tried shatin junior before, but too long waiting line, some said it is good but some said not.

My daughter has silmilar situation as MountainView's son. She finished her kindergarten in Australia and switched to local P.1 three years ago. She is also attending an english primary school at the moment. She is doing fine in all the subjects except Chinese. She is a good girl and also works hard in this subject. However, lack of 6 years Chinese foundation is not easy to catch up in a short time. Her chinese is still very behind in the class.

If it is necessary to switch from Int'l to Local, it is better to arrange at Secondary school.

Because:
1. Local primary schools have extremely high workload
2. English language foundation should be built all through the primary stage
3. The child is mature enough to handle the switching burden

My son switched from Int'l to Local since F1. Although it has difficulties in Chinese and Chinese History, he enjoys the benefit for all English subjects.

Frankly, the difficulties are not about academic, it's about the emotional.

Please aware the child's emotional status to see whether he/she can adapt to a new environment.

FYI, my son still loves his Int'l school in primary. As his obtain academic achievement in local secondary school, he could only comment the current local secondary school "It's ok", not yet fine...

Thanks, he is fine. At first, my son complained everything about the local secondary school, such as:
facilities - about the fee variance, it is easy to understand that the gap is huge.
language environment- although he entered an English local Secondary,all students are talking in Catonese.
Classmates - at first, he found the students are more naughty than the Int'l. I guess it is due to all students are going to teenagers stage. Teenagers always complain.

Finally, he works everything fine at the new school. He has friends. As he got high marks in all English related topics, he makes friends easily. He helps classmates in English,and his friends help him Chinese.

I would make the same choice. Because all my family are very sure that why my son switch to this local school.
Because he loves art, and only this school is EMB with art support.
Our financial plan is saving money and let him study overseas if it is required. If we kept spending HK$100,000, we won't have spare money for his future.
We evaluate my son's situation can overcome the change. Although he was quite up sad for a few months, he finally overcome with our support.

Thanks God that he got both Chinese & Chinese History past in his final exam.
With his strong English background, he almost got the third top for all English related subjects.

For this exam, my husband helped his study. Actually, my son did well in revision. His weakness is only about Writting Chinese.

Would you mind to PM your son secondly school name to me as I can forecase may be I have the same situation with you for few years later. My daugther now is P.4 and I still have a younger daugther really great pressure on finianial especially for the secondary shool fee.
