Have you heard anything about this programme (EPGY)? I'm interested in both Math & English for my child. It is a long distance course offered by Stanford University.
Please comment.

Well, what do you want to know?

My daughter took the maths course since P.2, however, it was stopped when she was S.1, she was overloaded and maths is not her interest. We let her make this decision becuase her talent is not on numbers or calculation, yet, she finds the EPGY course is useful to her study in additional maths today.

i'm hesitated to arrange EPGY course for my boy. He'll be P.1 in coming Sept. and he's showing interest in calculation. Teachers are quite positive about his analytical skill.

Just like any mother, i wish his interest and talent can blossom with the best guidiance.

Yet he might lost his interest in Math. if get pushed ?
Would EPGY make him feel that Math. is sth. too tough ?
Would kids in EPGY being too smart that strike his confidence ?

Sounds too protective ? Yet it's a learning centre, we can't expect proper consultation channels like a school, i suppose.

Of course, EPGY is a very tempting course, with the backup of Stanford University (exemption granted seems). In fact, i did try to arrange for my boy's K2>K3 summer. A gentleman in EPGY HKG office advised to wait, since he'll have to pass a written assessment in a BIG hall.

Dear bplus, thank you for sharing. May i know when your princess started showing little interest in Math.? Did she tell any reason ? Is it true that we can take our own pace in the entire EPGY progress ?

My boy attended their Maths' talant search last winter, and got an "Excellent" result. However, I didn't enrol any of their courses. I reckon it's very time consuming and you have to sacrifice some other activities to cope with it. Otherwise, you may not have enough time to finish its assignments. Another concern, their centre (Causeway Bay) is far from my place.

Have called Infokids, and some doubts get cleared:

My boy shall take his Aptitude Test in a small classroom. The BIG hall is only meant for the Annual Talent Search for 7+ yrs.

Seems the curriculum is so well designed that it won't "Kill the kid's interest". Look, i mean Interest, not Talent. If my boy is really Talented, there's nothing to worry.

After talking to the nice lady (forgot to ask her name), i'm now convinced that such exposure and challenge is good for a talented kid. She emphasized this course (In Infokids) is for Gifted child only.

Hello Egghead,

InfoKids is operated by a couple, I forgot their names now, they are very nice and helpful. Yes, EPGY is intended for the gifted child only, so no “repeat”, if you cannot catch up with the progress, or fail in the grade test, you have a chance to re-test, or even stop for a term, and come back for the grade test again. But the lesson content is quite different from those in Hong Kong, you can obtain this information directly from the EPGY website. In grade 1, your child will learn “set”, “empty sets”, “union sets” etc. And, the measuring units are inches, feet, the places, people mentioned in the exercises are all American. In fact, EPGY is a home-study or long-distance learning course, but in HK, as operated by InfoKids, they have Cantonese speaking tutors to run the day course in their venue, but your child has to attend the virtual classes at home too, don’t worry, the Cantonese speaking tutors will be at the other side in Hong Kong, not in Stanford, to give your child another chance to ask questions regarding the weekly assignment. But, your assistance is necessary when your child is still young. I highly recommend your child to take this course if he has got the talent and interest in maths (but, very expensive !!).

But, there are other problems to be considered, according to my daughter’s experience:
1. the EGPY will train your child to get the answer quickly, without showing the steps, as a result, my daughter skipped the necessary steps in her school home work, marks were lost in the test and exam.
2. day dreaming in her normal maths lesson in school, she found the lessons too easy for her.

Yes, the test is so called “Stanford Mathematical Appitude Test”, my daughter said not difficult at all.

May be missing the "steps" and the marks won't bother us much. For the day dreaming part ... that's exactly the question i missed out.

If my boy is so very much gifted, he'll anyway for sure to find everyday class boring. Now, the issue is that i'm not confident whether he's really gifted, even he can be very talented. Then, we can be initiating a problem, rather than a help ...

i found some previous discussion in BK, saying that the Hong Kong Centre teaching style is quite "spoon feed"
