I am not sure if this is the right place to post, but just want to share what I withness in Canada.
FYI, it is a public school, ( K-G6 only) and the neigbourhood is normal working class.
The musical teacher comes up with a muscial performance and invited all students to participate. From the decoration, make-up to costume, all made by students and parent and there is 3 performance on 3 days. Everyone has to purchase ticket to watch and it is about 1.15hr long. My daughter is just in kindergarten and she has to sing 3 songs with her class...(not the kiddie song as it has more complicated words).

Ignore about the donation part, just to see how happy my daughter to sing on stage and with all the movement, it is worth alot to me. Besides, it is an opportunity for the older kids as they are just about 10 or 11yrs old, to stand on the stage to sing, to speak, to dance. From what I observe, I think it is a win-win situation as school can get some money while the students can benefit by actually participating.

If all the principals treat their school as a business, I think that is a very good idea to generate cash and I am very happy to donate money as it is a very good memory for any students in the school.

I know Independent Schools require a lot of funding through donation as they dont have or less funding than Public schools.  Your opinion is one of them, they do sell a lot of department store couple (ie.  superstore, T&T,  theatre tkt, Starbucks...TH...etc..) as school normally get a discount on buying bulk order of couples and for us I can buy the threatre tkt a few dollars less than regular price...it's also win-win situation.  They also need parents' help as volunteers , as they dont have enough manpower.  Parents need to pay certain amount as deposit and if they cannot provide enough hours on volunteer work, money will be deducted.

Yes we all know private school require donation, but my daughter is in public school. At first I felt weird to give donation as my tax money should contribute enough, but when I saw how happy for my daugter to have a better school, then I feel it is worth to give some.

By the way, today I met one parent and he inspires me about education. He said he will put the child in public school and spare the money to put the child in private tutor shop. I think it is good idea as private school charge a lot and there is no gurantee your child will get full attention.

In fact I feel weird to see so many chinese students going to private tutors after school, even on Sat and Sun.  Some of them are already on the top rank in class.  My friend's son studying in private school, teacher asked parent to stop sending him to Kumon Maths, coz his maths already advance to others.

I agreed there may not be a big difference between Independent or public school,  but there is in Secondary school.  Class ratio in private one is low and students are more selective and academic result are better.

If you are living in BC, you may take a look on a report done by Ming Pao in Feb.  The report breifly described the academic result and ranking to both Ele and Secondary schools.

Why it is weird to go to private tutors? I think all Asians, which Chinese is just one of them,  are more concern the academic result and always want our kids be the smartest, right?

As per the Fraser report, I think it is just for reference as there is too many negative things regarding the accuracy of the report.

I understand high school is more competitive and that;s why we are trying to give the solid foundation to our kids when they are in elementry.

I agreed to take Chinese supplement class outside but not other subjects unless kids are still under ESL.

I have many friends whose children never attended any private tutors, still can get a scholarship to enter to good University.

Seems it is the Chinese culture to put  kids to private tutors and keep drilling exercises.

As a parent, I think we should know whether it is good to send our kids to tutor, right?

My daughter still very young and extra assistant is not important, but when she is older, then I think it really depends on the situation. I am not sure how old is your kids and how well she/he perform in the class, I guess if fanancial and time available, it is always good to put them under expert to learn the technique.  Remeber our old saying, "practice makes perfect". It is always true!

I won't say private tutor is only for Chinese as if you are in Vancouver, you will see who went to tutor shop. There are lots of parent who care their kids and that;s why they put them there. Yes, HK is kind of extreme as I can see private tutors are far more famous than traditional teacher!

Just curious if you did very well in school without any assistant?
