Let me try:

dates - a_e (long 'a' sound, silent 'e') = says 'a'

days - ay (long 'a' sound) = says 'a'

since, both words are in plural form, I suppose they sound the same.

Please correct me if I ...

I do think when both words are in plural form, the sound is quite the same.

In my experience in unseen dictation, the student needs to understand the meaning of the whole sentence, too, in order to write the correct word.   My classmates always lost marks because they never think what the teacher is saying, they just hear the sound and write.

If you use IPA , the only difference is "t" sound , I omit the "s" for easy comparison :

(1) date = /deit/
(2) day = /dei/

remark : the sound /ei/ is same as letter A.
So that's the reason why we need to learn IPA , you can know the difference effectively.

happy-b,

Well...  I think the one asking this question knows that:

(1) date = /deit/
(2) day = /dei/

Her query is absolutely, when the words has a "s".   For myself, I seldom hear and say /deits/ for "dates", but it doesn't mean I am right.

Will a sound at the end of a word 'change' or 'omit' when connecting to other letter sounds?  I think it is what she's asking.

'e' in beg is a short 'e'
'e' in cheese is a long 'e'
兩個e是不同發音的, 對嗎?

以前讀書嗰陣時,好似話vowel 同 voiced consonants 之後的 "s" 要讀 /z/ 而不是讀 /s/,所以dates應以 /s/ 結尾,而 days則應以 /z/ 結尾。

Thank you.  I've already checked that "days" = "daz", only cannot find the pronounciation of "dates".

我在阿女longman自學網站post了以下問題,導師答覆如下,請參考:

問題
Grateful if you could tell us how to tell which sound of the plural "s"(/s/, /z/, /iz/??)in the end of nouns should be used. And could you also recommend a book on pronunciation rules like the plural -s and past tense -ed because they are kind of subtle to non-English speakers like us. A million thanks

答案
Here are some simple rules for you to follow: Plural endings or 3rd person singular present tense verb ending: (1) Say it as /z/ if the noun or verb ends in a vowel sound or one of the following sounds: /b/, /d/, /g/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /v/, ‘ng’ sound as in ‘song’, ‘th’ sound as in ‘bathe’. (You should feel vibration if you put your hand on your throat when you make these sounds.) (2) Say it as /s/ if the noun or verb ends in one of the following sounds: /f/, /k/, /p/, /t/, ‘th’ sound as in ‘month’. (3) Say it as /iz/ if the noun or verb ends in one of the following sounds: /z/, /s/, ‘sh’ sound as in ‘dish’, ‘ch’ sound as in ‘match’, the final sound of ‘orange’. Past tense verb endings: (1) Say it as /d/ if the verb ends in a vowel sound or one of the following sounds: /b/, /g/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /v/, /z/, ‘ng’ sound as in ‘bang’, ‘th’ sound as in ‘bathe’, the final sound of ‘judge’. (You should feel vibration if you put your hand on your throat when you make these sounds.) (2) Say it as /t/ if the verb ends in one of the following sounds: /f/, /k/, /p/, /s/, ‘ch’ sound as in ‘touch’, ‘sh’ sound as in ‘push’, ‘th’ sound as in ‘bath’ (3) Say it as /id/, if the verb ends in the /d/ or /t/ sound. If you know the phonetic symbols, you can look up the pronunciation of a noun or verb in a dictionary. Look at the final sound of the word and you will know how to say its plural or past tense ending.
