I'm studying in DBS.

Actually, whether one can achieve good grades at school or not totally depends on how he studies, AND very importantly, whether he is willing to study. I believe we can hardly see a school where all students there are devoted to studying. For many other so-called "famous schools", we can easily find a number of students who are destructive outside (or inside) their schools; even for schools like QC which are proud of their academic excellence, they still generate quite a number of 0-mark students in CE.

For DBS, I believe those who are willing to study can surely gain a lot, not only academically, but also in other aspects. The school is willing to give chances to its students to develop their skills in leadership. Most of the activities, including sports, music and cultural ones, are organized by students, with the guidance of teachers. Academically, the general learning atmosphere is fine. Students who are promoted from DPS usually communicate in English, while students from other schools are stronger in Chinese. There isn't really intense academic competition and we're willing to help each other out when we find difficulties.

Academic results greatly depend on one's attitude towards studies, and teachers are willing to help those who cannot catch up, provided that they're willing to learn.

I'm also from DBS.
In fact, the classes are divided according to the academic results. Students rank top 114 will be allocated to A, B, C classes, according to the ranking in Chinese and English respectively. However, students rank lower than 114 will just be allocated to D, E, F classes randomly.  Well, for A, B, and C, the learning atmosphere is quite good. I have not been in D,E,F before, therefore i can't tell what the actual learning atmosphere is. However, i can say that students in D,E,F usually play well in sports or music, but their conduct are not that good.
There are not many homeworks, tests or dictations in school, but with lots of projects in the second term.  For form 1 and 2, i think it is ok to study and play sports at the same time. These periods are quite relaxing. However, you will feel stressful starting from form 3. I think over 80% of students have attended tutorial classes.
HPChingchingma, i think your friend should consider deliberately whether to let her son enter DBS or not. For this year Form 1 (G7), some students are quite troublesome and they do not behave really well. A few students don't even understand what the teaching is saying. My personal feeling tells me that this year form 1 is quite arrogant, selfish and "inchy" than the previous years of form 1.
There are examples that students give up sports or music in higher form in order to concentrate on their academic. Btw, Most of the sports end in May, therefore students should have enough time to revise for their final examinations. As long as your friend's son can pass all the exam,  i'm quite sure he can be promoted until form 5 (that's another word for CE).
If your friend's son is confident that he can manage his academics well, i think it's worth to choose DBS as this school can really help students to develop themselves into an all-rounded person.

In response to Jeffrey Li's message, I myself have been in E-F classes in the previous years. I'm not saying that there're no weaker students in DBS. As I've mentioned in the above post, every school has weaker students and I believe that the "weaker" students in DBS are not much worse than other schools. As long as the student himself is willing to learn then I believe he'll not get really bad results.
