Studying Overseas is Worthwhile?

The universities in Hong Kong were top among others in the globe.

For example, Hong Kong U was ranked 40 something, while Chinese U 50 something. Hence, the question is: if a place has been offered by the universities in Hong Kong, should one go overseas for study?

The fact is, many oversea univeristies were ranked lower than the universities in Hong Kong.

What do you think?

If you have money, it is always good to go overseas to study as you can see the different cultures, become independent and improve your language ability.
yes, ranking is important but how much you really gain from university is the main issue.
Think this way, how you have confident to say you are the best? If you never know what is the outside world? Or you dont mind to hide in the library for 3 or 4 yrs in order to achieve the highest marks?
I studied in Australia and I never regret I choose that way as it really help me to look at things in different view. this is more than anything that I can get from books.

I really agree~ I studied in Canada, I can say that if I didn't go to Canada for university, I will just like most of the kids in HK now, playing TV games, singing K, talking about ent. news etc... The western study environment is usually for a kid to wide open to think of a matter, and is not just study & remember a book.

I agree with Xother & Now-insure. That's why my boy is studying in Australia now.

If i keep him with me, he will never aware what is happening around. I will arrange all the things for him including meals, accommodation, studying, travelling... He has nothing to worry about.

As quoted by Now-insure <kids in HK now, playing TV games, singing K, talking about ent. news etc... >. I want my kid experiences much more than in HK.

我覺得有能力當然出去看看其他地方, 學習獨立, 學習自己解決所以問題.

香港的大學排名係好, 但係好多近幾年的畢業生的英文真係唔係太好, 始終英文真係要出去滲先得.

我囡囡剛到澳讀year 7, 雖然大家都好掛念對方, 但係真係長大了, 應付事情能力高, 在香港乜都唔駛做, 去到宿舍乜都要自己做. 最好係佢而家明白到父母原來係咁偉大一直無微不至地照顧佢, 我地以前關係好好, 而家更加好, 好似老朋友一樣........

I agree as well. I studied in Australia. Apart from the degree, it also open my mind/thought to the world. Think about the uni students in HK, all they do is computer games, karaoke, or being a private tutor and get more money. I definitely don't want my kid be like that.

I studied in Canada. But I found that some people in HK always believe that overseas universities are 野雞大學. Besides, the HK government also cannot guarantee that oversea degrees are recognized by her. Do you guys agree? How can I know whether our degree is fully recognized ?

一般來說, 一 d 出名大學既 degree 香港都會 recognise 既, 如有疑問, 考評局可以評估個 degree 係咪 recognised. 不過好似要收 $$ 既. 打個電話去問吓啦.

要收2千多元去assess 一次,仲要已讀完才會評估。如已讀完個degree，到時先話唔recognise咪死?其實是不是所有UK, USA, Canada and Australia的degree hk都會recognise?

97回歸之後, 已經沒有自動承認英聯邦國家學歷這回事. 所有非本地學歷都必須由香港學術評審局vet過, 才能確定等同本地學歷. 但我想這樣的要求, 只是申請政府工或做教師時有影響, 估計私人公司未必有這個需要. Of course it's always good to get accreditation, or to have a degree awarded by a world class university.

Personally, think it is worthy.

In general, studying overseas give a wider exposure, especially if studying in country with different culture.

It may also be a chance to train to be independence, and to think creatively.
