Structured Chinese/Mandarin Learning Program

I have been researching for chinese lessons for my little ones who are in IS. What I noticed is there isn't a really structured chinese learning program that allows the child to learn continously. There are a lot of learning centres out there but most of them are either playgroups that the child goes once a week or private tutoring that teaches chinese reading and writing based on a customized syllabus. I always believe that it requires continuous learning to be effective. I found that Better Chinese's curriculum is very complete (they have program from K-12) but its centre in HK only teaches once a week at all levels. I wish there is a structured program which my child can follow from 3/4 years old until secondary school which they go on a regular basis during the week (at least 2 or 3 times).

Does anyone share my thoughts?

如果你準備送孩子進IS讀書或已經在IS就讀，那麽中文（中國語文，不是指廣東話）一定要自己教。

我見過幾個類似的情況，孩子在小學3年級后，開始排斥中文、不肯學中文，一面倒的看英文故事書、說英語。雖然他們大部分都會說廣東話，但是對中文認識程度，只有本地學生的一、二年級水平。

以我個人為例，曾有一段日子陪3嵗的女兒看完中文故事書，再看英文故事書，結果發現她開始願意看及聼以英文文字表達的書。所以，我現在每天晚上教我女兒跟我看字學讀三字經和弟子規，另外只講中文的故事書和念唐詩給她聼。至於英語，我就交給IS教她好了，反正IS的大環境就是以英語爲主，因此根本就不用擔心她學不會。

你如果想孩子中文好，要麽就自己教，要麽就一定要幫他找一個好的、有耐性的中文（廣東話或普通話）老師，一個星期3次，每次一個小時，在玩耍中學習，這樣才能保持他對中文的興趣，同時增進對中文的接觸和認識。

對就讀IS的小朋友來説，中文是越早接觸就越好。假若等到他接受了英文之後，再讓他去學中文，可能會晚了。

May I know what language (chinese/english) do u talk to your daughter daily?

My husband and I are planning to send my son (now 1.5 yrs old) to IS. So we talk to him in English. But now, I'm afraid he will used to English and refuse to learn chinese.

Should I speak to him in chinese and let him to learn English in IS?

Hi evatsoihk,

I agree with you.  I think we have to do it ourselves, unless we could find a school that actually teaches a continous curriculum.  I am planning to buy Better chinese's materials and teach my kid at home as their program starts as young as 3 years.  It's important to engage them early.

I think KinderU's Zhonghua Zhizing program is good in a sense that they insist that the child learns it at least 3 times a week.  But unfortunately I don't believe in their philosophy.  I don't think a child should be memorizing words.  They should understand what they read.

I hope Better Chinese will come out with a formal program in the future, i.e. a chinese school that children in IS could go daily for one to two hours.  I am sure it's something a lot of the IS parents out there would love to have.  Don't you think ?

在家中我是跟女兒說中文的，從不說英語（有一段時間曾經嘗試過說講完中文故事，再說英文故事，但發現她開始接受看英語字母式的文字多過中文符號式的文字，所以我就馬上停止了再説英語故事給她聼）。

我的女兒目前在蘇浙上K1，上午班是本地主流班（普通話）、下午班是IS（英語）。IS的老師告訴我，剛剛這個上半學期，她由聼不懂英語（因此初期她無法專心上課），到現在開始喜歡聼老師說故事（而且很是專心留意的那種），同時已經可以跟著並按照老師的指示去做事情。但由於我們家裏沒有英語環境，所以她的英語詞彙不夠，很多時候無法回應老師的問題。但對我來説，她開始能聼得懂，也就意味著她接下來會開始嘗試說了，因爲其他同學的英語都比她好，也就造就並提供了一個互動的語言交流環境給她。

她的一個同學，本身也是上、下午班的，家裏是以說英語為主的中國人家庭。但是開課沒多久，他要求自己的媽媽說不要讀上午班的普通話課，因爲他喜歡下午班的英語課。結果他媽媽爲了“逼”他讀上午班，將下午班的IS放棄了。

我也曾問過我女兒，喜歡上午班還是下午班，答案竟然也是下午班（幸虧我女兒不懂得要求什麽）。原因應該是上午班相對的較下午班學生多、教師授課手法不一樣。

我建議，你們可以其中一個人堅持跟他說英語、看英文故事（方便日後的英語面試），另一個人堅持跟他說廣東話/普通話、看中文故事，小朋友自會有他自己的方法去區分這兩种語言，你們千萬別中英混雜的說。

這一點，完全取決於你個人的想法。

在我來説，由於我比較清晰的知道我會讓孩子在IS升讀上去，而且我也相信IS的語言大環境，還有孩子自己需要與其他同學的交流（這個很重要），自然而然會培養出英語的能力。相反，中文在IS裏面始終是一種類似第二語言的文化，雖然學校在教授中文方面也很努力，但始終是“有心無力”，皆因它的大環境就是英語，若真的想要做到中英並重，只有靠我們在家裏自小對孩子的灌輸了。

其實，三字經和弟子規等書，裏面是有一些哲理在面的，當然有一些也是不合時宜的。當讀到一些内容比較淺並容易理解的道理時，我便會嘗試跟孩子解説，例如：“物雖小　勿私藏　苟私藏　親心傷”、“身有傷　貽親憂　德有傷　貽親羞”等等，這些道理孩子是明白並且吸收的。

另外，一邊指著字，一邊誦讀，孩子是可以記住的那些字的。可能有一天他在某處看到某個字時，會忽然之間指著那個字，讀出那個字音。當然，你不要期望他們每個字都能記住，但是慢慢來，是會有成效的。

May I know which IS kindergarten does your daughter study?
I also plan to let my son to study one local kinder and one international in different sessions. But I afraid that he will be too tired. If he feel tired, I would drop the local kinder. I found that. he is interested in English but not in Chinese.

我的女兒目前全天都在北角的“蘇浙”就讀K1，上午班是普通話的主流班、下午班是英語的國際班。

中午吃飯也在學校（自己帶飯），飯後有老師帶領他們去午睡及安排他們到下午的國際班上課。

另外，我幫我女兒報讀了另一所IS（它是4嵗才開始招生），下個星期二面試，未知是否錄取。假若有幸錄取的話，我會在家中自己幫孩子補中文，而英語方面，我就交給學校去教了。

此外，你提到：“I found that. he is interested in English but not in Chinese.”，這是絕大部分孩子（從幼兒開始接觸中、英文雙語的孩子）的想法，皆因英文比中文容易上手。

但我們身為家長的不應該因爲孩子比較喜歡英語，而放棄讓他學習中文的機會，反而要更加鼓勵孩子，並提起他對中文的興趣——中文：以普通話教授的中國語文。

我的情況相反,我的女兒唸中文幼稚園,從出生開始,就一直是英文,直到上了幼稚園,連興趣班也是英文的,不過自從他認識了同學仔,就開始講中文了,當然她的幼稚園老師也功不可沒.

我是不太相信英文比較容易這種話的.我見過不少移民家庭的孩子,中文一樣講的很好,最重要的是你要讓他知道在什麼場合說什麼語言,而不是立場飄乎.

很替你高興，鼓勵自己生長在一個以英語為母語家庭的孩子去學習中文，希望她繼續努力，不要放棄就讀中文學校。正如我的孩子一樣，我也會支持她在IS學習好英文。

你提到的“最重要的是你要讓他知道在什麼場合說什麼語言,而不是立場飄乎.”這一點，我非常認同。其實，只要作爲家長或老師的我們，不要常以“半英半中”的方式來教他們，小朋友自會懂得分場合（對不同的人）說不同的語言的。

Both my son and daughter are from SIS.They have been going to this learning center for Chinese tution
for 3 months already.I am happy with their progress
so far.Both children improved in hanyu pinyin etc.
A lot of IS students there,the center teaches simplify
chinese based on the Singapore syllabus.I noticed that other IS students are learning there as well. They offered a continued chinese language learning
from P1 to P6.This may be what you are looking for.

I have a problem, please help!

My son learn some cantonese wordings such as 狗, (麵)包. Should I follow (reinforce) him to say 狗 or tell him "this is dog" instead?

If I tell him "this is a dog", will it cause confusion and discourage him to talk?

But if I say "yes, correct it is 狗", it breaks the rule.

Please share yr experience.
