My son passed grade 5 violin exam last year. The violin teacher said that he should learn piano now. Otherwise he cannot play good when further learning in Grade 6 or above in violin.

I am in doubt whether my son can have enough time to learn and practise both piano and violin together in addition to his heavy homework from school. Another problem is that it is quite hard for my home to accommodate a piano. Besides, the price of a piano is quite expensive to me. Grateful if moms can answer my following queries :-

Is it a must for learning piano when learning violin in higher grade ?

From my limited knowledge, I understand that to learn piano will improve the hearing / aural section in the violin examination. Can I just study some course for ear training to serve the same purpose ?

No, that's not required to have piano. Besides, to those professional violin teacher, he / she won't suggest you spend time on another instrument, but would he/she means to learn Music theory??

On the other hand, learning piano is not only improving aural, but the understanding to music. Since when you learn more, music is not only on performance but also theory / understanding. learning some basic things on piano will help further on your grade 6-8 music theory, but surely not at the moment on grade 5 violin.

my son learnt violin as well, i can say piano helps him alots not only in Aural but the whole understanding in music. As the violin is mainly a single melodic instrument, piano can give him more about harmony and mroe or less compensating his weaknesses. Especially it is time for your son to start learning theory to pursue his higher grade exam, with some piano skills it can help him to understand those theories.

Thanks for your information.

In my case, my son has already passed Grade 5 violin. His sight reading is ggod , he got 20 out of 21 in the Grade 5 violin examination.

Will it still be a great help for him to learn piano as well ?

May I have your valuable advice.
