Re: St. Johannes School

The school never posts its secondary allocation results to the homepage.  I have asked the senior teacher about it.  She only said that most of the graduates entered English secondary schools in the Kowloon Tong district.
As parents, I understand that we would be eager to know the figure as much as possible.  However, I find that if children are good at academic, particularly in English.  I’m not worried about it too much.

Re: St. Johannes School

Hi whfok

I read some of your passages on BK these days.  I just know that your child is now studying in SJS.  My daughter was admitted for 2007/08 P.1.  Actually, I think she would not be accepted since her KG is only activities approach and academic level is not high.  I just want to let her have a chance for the interveiw at SJS.  However, it is luckily she can get a place there.

I really want to know more about this school.  She gets another seats in other school with train-through secondary school but my daughter told me that she likes SJS after interview.

Can you tell me more about the school life?  Do they have many homework per day? How many?  Is it necessary to have private tutor for the subjects?  Can you also tell me that what kinds of subjects are talked in English and Mandarin?

Many thanks for you help and info.

Best wishes

Re: St. Johannes School

First of all, glad to hear that your daughter got the place to SJC.
Certainly, I'm willing to share the school life with you.  The school starts at 8:30am and ends at 3:30pm.  My son arrives home at 4:40pm.  For those who request, they may stay at school to complete the homework until 5:00pm.  It's free of charge.  But no school bus service for return trip is provided.  Normally, my son has about 5 – 6 homework everyday.  With my assistance, he can complete it around 8:30pm.  Up to now, I haven't looked for a private tutor for my son.  If you have no time to take care of her/his homework, I think so.  It's because its level is very high and tough.  For example, now he is learning “time”, “calendar ” and “乘數” in Maths.  Sometimes, it's so hard to let him understand.  The subjects in English are General English, English Reading, Oral, Phonics, Maths, General Science and Health Education.  The others in Chinese are 中文, 中文常識, 聖經, 普通話, 電腦 and 音樂.The students can join the paid extra activities on Fridays after school.
For SJC, you should consider its small campus, the traditional teaching approach, high school fee and no its own secondary school.
However, I like its small class-size 27-29 each class from P1 to P6, more close relationship between the class teacher and her classmates, the traditional teaching approach (my wife loves it) and English environment.
My son also came from the activity approach kindergarten.  It's quite hard for him to catch up in the first few months.  Anyway, he loves the schooling every day and has a big improvement in English, particularly English oral.
If your daughter got a place of the train-through primary/secondary school, you should consider between them.
Lastly, I also want to know why your daughter loves SJC very much after the interview.  May you share with me and BK parents?

Re: St. Johannes School

Thank you very much for your valuable experience.

To be honest, I am still thinking for the choose of the primary school for my daughter.

She gets place at the new school of Baptist Universit, i.e. a train-through school and Tsung Tsin.  Besides, she had the interview at KTS and Pui Ching.  The last two schools were not yet annouced the result.  However, I have talked with my daughter.  She told me that she doesn't like Pui Ching while the interview made her feel very boring and the teachers are very cool.  She likes the campus of KTS.  As she knows that the A-School of Baptist University is also activity approach, then she thinks it is the same as her KG then she has the favour of it.

However, after she has the interview at SJS, she told me she likes this one very much.  During the interview, she felt very happy.  She can understand the questions of the teachers and also played happily during the interview.  Although the campus is small, she feels it is warm and she likes the teachers.

I know it is her own feeling, but she is the end-user for studing in a primary school.  I think I have to respect her feeling.

I know SJS is a very traditional school.  That's why I have to consider it.  Since my daughter is now learning in an activity approach school, I found that the things she learnt in the KG were not enough.  I don't like the teaching method but just found my daughter feels happy for the school life.  I worry about the adaption of the significant change of teaching methof for my daughter.

Since I have to work, I worry of the time that I can spend for her study.  But if she can finish the homework at school until 5, then it may help me to reduce the pressure and save my time for doing homework and I can spend it with her for revision.

Re: St. Johannes School

Hi Rebecca,

I saw that there are about 4 native teachers in SJC.  I think they are for kindergarten and primary section.  The native teacher teaches my son in Oral and Phonics lessons.  Each week he has 2 - 3 dictations (Chinese, English or English Reading).  For examination, the subjects are broken into many small subjects.  It sounds that beside main subjects, it also contains Chinese/English penmanship, Chinese/English Dictation, Oral, Phonics, English Reading, Chinese/English composition.
Up to now, I don’t feel that he was forced by the school.  My son feels happy to school everyday.  He never blames the school.  Maybe he is used to study in SJC.
Normally, he can complete the homework around 8:30pm to 9:00pm.  After practicing piano, he is used to go bed before 10:00pm.
Since it's a small class, the relationship among class teacher and classmates are very good.

Re: St. Johannes School

Hi whfok

Can you tell me what time your son start to do the homework?  As I told you before, I have to work and may arrive home only after 7.  If your son starts to do homwork at 5 and has to work until 9, then I think my daughter has to work until 11.

Can you advise me more about that?

Re: St. Johannes School

Hi Busywoman,

As I live in Tsing Yi, the school bus arrives here at 4:40pm.  After school, he has a small snack, bathing, playing (他還是在地上玩車仔的階段) and then a dinner.  He starts to do the homework about 7:15pm.  Certainly, we need to assist him to complete it.  For copying (抄寫), he has already completed some at school.  Normally, we could complete it before 9:00pm.  Of course, there are some breaks in between, for example, eat fruit, drink soup, etc.  If there is a dictation tomorrow, the time will be extended.
In my opinion, the quality of 直資/私位小學 are better than that of 資助小學 if it is affordable to some parents.
祝你下星期大抽獎中你的首選, 或有更多私校收你的女兒, 到時, 再好好考慮吧!

Re: St. Johannes School

Hi whfok

I will not have the lucky draw anymore as I have waived it by accepting a place of a 直資 primary school in October.  After that I recieved the admission of another private school as well as SJS.  Up to this moment, I am just thinking of the choose between the 直資primary school and SJS.  I do hope my daugther can be happy in her school life and can learn much more in the future.

As per your information, the workload of homework for your son is not too heavy as expected or advised by the others.  Actually, I like SJS and just worry about the workload of my daughter since I have to work for 5.5days a week.

Re: St. Johannes School

I really forgot it that your daughter gets a place to BU primary school.  BU is such a very good school that it has its own secondary school, bilingual (English/Mandarin class teacher), big school campus, strong academic background and low school fee.  It's totally difference from SJC.  Could you tell me what you consider among them.

Re: St. Johannes School

For BU A-School, the Principal is from the Homantin Government School, the three Vice Principal is from two international schools and one general school.  Genera speaking, A-School is an activity approach school with train-through secondary with bilingual teaching language.  In fact, the campus is very big with high I/T coverage.  The school fee is almost the same as SJS.  For 2006/07, it is at HK$35,000p.a.  However, it is a newly established school.  We cannot find any result from the school.  We can only trust the academic background of BU.  Since it is a new school, the admin and procedures of different aspects are still under development.  I have asked some info from the school but is still waiting for the reply for more than 1 month.

Previously, I want to find an activity approach school for my daughter and let her have happy school life.  However, I found her KG can really make her be very happy for the school life, but it cannot properly build up her academic knowledge up to my minimum standard. Therefore, after receiving the SJS acceptance of admission, I start to change my mind.  Maybe a traditional school not only enhance her academic knowledge, but also provide her a happy school life.  The difficulty that I have to face for studying in SJS is the selection of the secondary school again.  I have collected the info for the primary for long time.  If I have to collect the info for the secondary school again for the coming years, it is really a hard time for me.

Actually,  I am now finding the info for the secondary school in order to have adequate info before  I make the decision.

Do you think I am too nervous?

In fact, your advice did help me to know more about SJS.

Re: St. Johannes School

Hello, I want to step-in to chat about this school because my daughter is studying in this school's kindergarten session (K.2).  I heard some negative comments from some parents in BK that SJS is not ethical and only pushes the students for high academic results.  Example, they teach 國際音標 in P.1 but not knowing why, some students are still totally ignorant about this knowledge in P.4.  These students finally understand this knowledge only when they joined private tutorial classes.  Would it because of SJS poor teaching method, or is it too over-demanding to ask P.1 students to learn this?.... Some said their writing assignments are overwelming the students everyday, giving both students and parents a great pressure.....some so-called existing SJS parents said the secondary school allocation of 2006 is unsatisfatory with some students allocated to band 3 Chinese secondary school.......Frankly speaking, I used to like this primary school and is ready to have my daughter to continue here for primary studies.  However, now I become uncertain because of many criticism received (although no evidence whether these comments are real or not).  Any opinions about this?  Also, do you know how much SJS will charge per year for P.1 study?

Re: St. Johannes School

HI Vickywich,

My son is P1 at SJC now.  He doesn't study國際音標 from SJC but he only learns Phonics, one lesson each week by a native teacher coming from UK whom I met in the school picnic this Oct.
Up to this moment, I don't find out what it happened as you said.  If any, I would post it.
I want to tell you that SJC

Re: St. Johannes School

No, my son came from the common KG besides my home.
SJC was recommended by BK kindergarten parents this July.  By the phone with 4 SJC KG parents, I known that the standard of SJC KG is very very high but also the children are very happy and enjoy the school days.
你可以去”談幼稚園”, click 入去"SJC Parent Club 06 Part 3" topic, 直接找 SJC 家長, 他們很樂意解答你. 我都是這樣才認識SJC.

Re: St. Johannes School

Thank you Whfok.

Does your son like this school?  Some so-called ex-SJC parents criticised about this school's profit-making nature.....  They said the teachers do not really teach for the good of the students but just to push them for high acedamic results so as to upgrade the school image.  They said the students are being pushed all the days, so no other activities for their balanced growth.  They also said the quality of food is so bad that their children refused to eat.  And many more....... What do you think?

One thing about this school I don't like is lack of transparency.  They don't publish the results of F.1 allocation of their P.6 students.  Some parents said in BK that the allocation result was very unsatisfactory this year.  Do you hear anything about this?  I trust this is very crucial for parents, like me, to choose primary school.

Many people appraise about the high English standard of this primary school students.  How's the progress of your son here?  I can't say my girl's English standard is as satisfactory as I originally expected when I put her in SJC K.1.  She can speak in English but not gramatically correct.  This standard is what she could already achieve before she started K.1 studies.  It seems that after more than one year study here doesn't help her much.  Therefore, I am worried whether SJC really teach good English.  Any comments? thanks.

Re: St. Johannes School

Hi beata.wong,

I don't know much about Victoria although I know it's quite popular.  SJC's culture is not transparent.  They don't have parents' association.  Another drawback is they only have whole day class for K.2 and K.3 students.

SJC primarily use English as teaching language although Cantonese translation is always given (as stated by my K.2 girl).  Mandarin is not formally taught up to now.  They just teach some Mandarin rthyms and songs.

Nonetheless, my girl likes SJC very much.  She respects all teachers here.  I can't say their English is really very strong as many people said because my girl doesn't give me such feeling.  However, I can tell you a fair comment that this may happen to many so-called English kindergarten, even as famous as  St Catherine.  My friend's girl is studying in SC K.2.  She could not read a level 1 English story book which I think the level is really simple for a SC student.  With my guidance, my girl can read level 4 books of this brand now.  As a conclusion, parents' guidance is the most important part in childhood study.  Only kindergarten can't help children as much as most parents expect.
