How old is your son?
Because young kid can only sit still for a short time.
You can use a timer. If your son is only 5 years old, set the timer for 5 minutes and leave it on the table so that your son can see the timer. And then you can ask him to set a target for himself. If he says he can finish memorizing 5 words in 5 minutes, tell him not to leave his chair in 5 minutes or before he can spell the 5 words.
Praise him if he can do it and then give him 2 minutes as a reward. After 2 minutes, ask him if he wants to challenge his record. Your son will think it is a lot of fun to study.
Do not blame him if he can't do it but ask him how much more time he needs and give him the time. After he finishes his work, praise him for his hard work still and give him a break too. Later, ask him if he wants to challenge his old record. Every kid likes games. You should make him think that studying is like a game. Then, he will study faster and faster.
