Is there anybody interesting to improve their English?
My cousin go to Manila for 2 weeks and I can see his English improve a lot. Wondering if there is anyone can go with my son together during New Year for 1-2 weeks.

Why Philippines? There are many other better choices such as learning English from a foreign teacher in HK or even go to US or England.

English of Philippines ........................................... I can just imagine of the domestic helpers in HK. Sorry, may be too biased.

Everybody have the same questions as yours.  But I can say that is totally wrong.
1.  Philippines is cheaper.  Now more and more people going to Singapore, or Malaysia.  Because they don't have chance to use English, even everyone is studing English since they are young.
2.  The English of Philippines in Asia countries is the best.
Actually English is their first language, the helper you see in Hong Kong mostly are from the village.  But at least they all can speak in English.  And the people in Manila, I can say their accent should be no problem.
Actually, even Europeans have different kind of accent.
It is all depends on who or where did you learn from.
I can see more and more families are hiring Filipino helper to be their children's tutor, didn't you hear about that?

菲律賓人即使英文好，但係太重菲律賓語口音。
要英文好，香港都好多好英語老師，外藉的華裔的都有。
要平，大陸都有好多人英文好。
其實，出外學英文，唔係淨係想學語文，我覺得都想小朋友看看英式 ( 或美式 ) 文化。
如果出國，係為了學英文，一定係去英國美國甚至加拿大，次選就係澳洲。但係都要小心選擇，我唔想小朋友學 d 美國牛仔或蘇格蘭口音。
不過咁，如果當係普通遊學，當係認識下菲律賓，都 ok。

其實在鬼佬心目中，香港人的英語口音重一點還是菲律賓人重一點？我估多數還是香港人重一點的機會大，聽慣了，不覺得也罷。

I have never heard about learning English in the Philippines. But I think it is really a good idea. A lot of my colleagues are from there and they are well-educated people. A lot of them are professional. To me, they speak perfect English. They speak Eng at home as well. Cannot compare with maids. And if you have a chance to get to know them as a friend, you will see how friendly they are.
I am sure kids can get along well with them easily.
Nowadays, if you want to learn and pratice Eng in western countries, not easy to find a place. Because Chinese are everywhere in the world. I am sure my son will hang around with other Chinese students.

Actually all of you have your points. I am quite worry about the safety problems too. But last year when I went there with my cousin, yes, the place is not that improve but they are clean. And safe. We can see police everywhere. We talked to the people, they said most of the kidnapping are happened in province, or some "red light district". There are always dangerous when you go to such district even in New York. My father in law worked in Hong Kong airport before. He told me that most of his colleages are from Manila and they are very professional(engineers). Very nice character. Yes, I think it is a very good chance for children to go 遊學. Let them know the different between poor country. May be they can learn more than what we can image.

所以我從來都不覺得我信一般本地老師可以教好小朋友英文(雖然他們的 spelling 或 grammar 可能很好)。但我們現在是說出外學英語，真是山又長，水又遠。

最初，想小朋友出外學英語的原因是甚麼？要 "學" 一樣東西，不是隨便找一個 "會" 的人便算。我也知英語在菲律賓很普遍，但普遍，不一定正統。說普遍，我相信新加坡英語更普遍，但他們的印度馬拉口音，也不是我想小朋友學的。

學語文，當然要學正統的口音。何唯 "正統"我不想爭辯，但以英語為例，一般是說英美加主流社會 (倫敦紐約多倫多等大城市) 用的。

菲律賓人的英語讀音，比香港人的問題大，原因是菲律賓語本身也是用 26 個字母；然而，這 26 個字母，如果用菲語讀，會跟英語很不同，因此他們有了一個 "字母發音" 的 "包袱" --- 他們很容易會不覺地，將英文當菲語讀。因此，這已不是 "口音" 問題，是 "發音" 問題。就正如，如果你有法國朋友德國朋友，你都會發覺，他們有些英語發音，也是說得很怪的。

如果主要是為學英語，我一定不會選去菲律賓，也不選法國德國，是順序選英美加澳。就正如，要學好普通話，我不會選台灣，也不會選湖南新疆，一定是北京。

即使是學英語，我也會好少心選擇，美國中部不會是我的選擇。出外學英語，沒有了港式口音，多了菲式口音，算是得益嗎？

當然，如果不只為語言，就去那裡也沒關係了。

This is an interesting topic....

Some may say one of the reasons for the low English standard of new U grad. - as many of them (of this generation) were trained by domestic helpers....

However I feel their (DH's) English standard is good enough for primary students.. At least if your child is brought up by them, your child's English standard should be able to pass the essential requirements of any best Primary schools..but not beyond..

Therefore it might be better (and easier) to leave your child totally to your DH (provided that her English is OK) than striving to get a seat from those "stuffed" Kindergartens...Maths and Chinese can be trained easily anyway...
