Re: night and evening 之介定

時間介定??? 這sentence 是在什麼情景先??

both正確: we have dinner at night. /we have dinner in the evening.

但兩sentence 比較,會prefer用 "we have dinner at night."

Re: night and evening 之介定

個人喜好﹐Dinner 用EVENING﹐ WATCHING TV 用AT NIGHT﹐因我是吃飯後看TV 的。感覺上﹐EVENING 是短一點的時間﹐ 如果我話﹕

I usually do my HW in the evening.
好像不用花太多時間。。

但如果我話﹐
I usually do my HW at night.
好像有很多功課﹐要做很久的樣子。。。

Re: night and evening 之介定

根據 Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary(Rev. 3rd Ed.):-
afternoon=time between morning and evening
evening=time between sunset and bedtime
night=dark hours between sunset and sunrise or
twilight and dawn

Therefore, both "evening" and "at night" are acceptable.

Re: night and evening 之介定

agreed. it's an accurate explanation!
when you have dinner, it mostly will use 'night'. but, if you are seeing someone on the street at night, when we say bye to them, mostly we will add 'have a good evening!'. but, if when that was time to leave and just go home for bed, you will say 'have a good night!' like now :)

Re: night and evening 之介定

Let's not make it too complicated.

Although grammatically either “in the evening” or “at night” can be used but the more popular usage would be “we have dinner in the evening.”

I am not sure about “night” hinting at a longer period of time than “evening” but definitely “night” would hint at a later hour, e.g. after bedtime.

In the evening when we meet someone, we say “good evening”; when we leave, we say “good night”. If it is clearly too early to say this, just say “good bye”. We only use “have a nice evening” in a context similar to the one in which we say “have a nice time”.

Re: night and evening 之介定

Another sentence to explain the relaionship between the two words:

When I drink coffee IN THE EVENING I cannot sleep AT NIGHT.
