My son is now having his Go Chess lesson in Child Go 香港兒童棋院(TST branch), just promoted to 初二班. But seems that he can't catch up with the standard. Seems he can hardly understand what the teacher said and always got the answers wrong (and then sometimes laughed by his classmates). I'm not sure if it's becos' he's studying in International school and that his understanding of Chinese is weaker; therefore affects his progress in learning Go Chess. You know, many terms in Go Chess are very difficult Chinese terms like 征子, 虎口 and it seems getting even more difficult now...

Any mommies have kids at similar age also learning Go Chess ? Please share your experience / opinion.

My son (almost 5) also learning chess at the same go chess school as your son, however, we are at HK side. He is taking 初三班 now. I realized that he also has the same difficulties as your son, I bet sometimes he cannot fully understand what the teacher said. There are two more boys in the class who are older than him, sometimes they laught at him too. I taught him that it doesn't matter as long as he has tried his best. He is about age to learn how to cope with this kind of situation. Since he likes go chess and enjoys the class very much, I will continue to let him enroll in the class. I am now learning with him in the class, so that when there is any terms or rules he cannot understand, I can explain to him at home. I hope very soon he can catch up with the others and attend the class by himself. I think as long as your kid enjoys the class, it is worth to let him continue. What they need is more encouragement to build up their confidence.

Yes, I do agree that this is an inevitable experience for him and it's time for him to cope with that. In fact, my son does not really mind that. It's my husband who is learning the chess with him and told me about the situation.

Your son is already in 初三班 ? And he's only almost 5 years old ? Did he take the 初一班 & 初二班 in Childgo ? And did he have any problem before ? In fact, the teacher of my son's 初一班 said he's ok to progress to 初二班 after the assessment in the 8th lesson. But now, the teacher in his 初二班 is different and my husband said this teacher seems more strict and serious than the one before.

Anyway, I'd asked my husband to talk to the teacher to see if anything can be done. Also, as you said, I asked my husband to revise the things learned and play more with my son to keep him progressing. I really think it's a shame to give up now after half a year's (he learned go chess in another school before Childgo) time & effort.

It is very nice to chat with you too.
Before my son joined Childgo, he has taken two terms' go chess course as interest class in his kindergarten, the course is also organized by Childgo. After that, since he is very interested in playing go chess, I enrolled him to the go chess school. The teacher assessed him and recommended him to take the level 2 class and skip the level 1 class, he was later on promoted to level 3. I think since go chess involves lots of technique and it's petty hard for young kid to pick up and understand in one or two lessons, therefore if they can play with parents or other kids more often, they will pick up the technique more easily. I also let him join the competition to let him has more exposure and experience. Of course the most important thing is that he has fun.
