我女晌一間full boarding女校讀，佢同埋佢啲本地住得近嘅同學，平均兩至三個星期返一次屋企，但係因為星期六早上有堂，星期六下午有時有體育比賽，星期日晚7點左右要返去，其實週末留晌屋企嘅時間唔多，就算只係weekly boarding，個體驗已經好唔同，晚晚都好似有啲嘢搞，又成日走去唔同房同其他同學傾計

Going home

Wycombe Abbey’s approach to boarding is sympathetic to the wishes of modern families. Each term includes two Short Leaves (three day exeats) and one Long Leave (Half Term). All girls return to their parents or guardians during these times. Long Leave holidays are around seven to ten days in length. During the rest of term, girls are allowed to spend a number of additional weekends at home.

We also allocate two weekends a term as ‘Closed Weekends’, where all girls stay in School and contribute to the creation of community through whole school events, activities and trips.

FLEXIBILITY AT WEEKENDS

We are primarily a full boarding school, however, from September 2021, we have introduced additional flexibility at weekends for our junior boarders. In addition to the full Exeats and half terms, most weekends boarders are permitted to leave College on a Saturday afternoon to be with their families or guardians once they have fulfilled their afternoon commitments, many of which will be sporting. All girls will then be expected to return to their boarding house for supper on the Sunday evening. There will be some exceptions ("closed weekends") such as the first and last weekends of every term, and for special functions, when boarders will be expected to remain in residence.

This flexibility has already been enjoyed by our Sixth Form boarding community for several years, and it's hoped that extending this to junior boarders will help families throughout College to balance their school and home lives. We also hope it will enable more parents to be able to support their daughter’s participation in College events during Saturday afternoons and evenings and feel a greater sense of connection to the College community.

In the middle of each term, there is a Long Exeat break (seven to ten days) and in the Michaelmas and Lent terms, there are two Short Exeats (a long weekend) with one Short Exeat in the Summer term. During the Exeats, all girls return to their parents or guardians. The first and last weekends of each term are ‘Closed Weekends’ when all boarders are expected to stay in School and important events and activities such as House Drama or other School-wide events take place. To ensure that girls catch up with family and have a well-earned rest from busy boarding school life, girls may go home on any other weekend, as long as their School commitments have been honoured. We believe that this offers our families the desired flexibility while ensuring that life at Downe House continues to thrive at the weekends with a busy programme available to all.

All pupils are welcome to spend Saturday nights away from School if they choose to – with the exception of three weekends each term (the first and final weekends for all pupils, and the first weekend after Half Term for Fourth to Upper Fifth).

Our weekly boarding model mirrors the approach we take with optional weekends at home, when pupils leave School after their lessons and sporting commitments on a Saturday, returning on Sunday evening.

We find that this approach allows families greater flexibility.

What happens at weekends?
