Re: St. Paul Co-ed

Hello 03baby

Re: St. Paul Co-ed

hoeve,

yeah not sure if it's a right choice for mandarin. there are 3 english/cantonese classes and only 1 english/mandarin class. the classmistress told me that this year 95% of this class speak english at home. most of them are local. only a few are mix or asian.

i also heard that many parents want this class... especially the morning class. i think it helps if you tell the school that you speak mandarin at home.

i didn't go to the victoria playgroup. i have attended another english speaking playgroup in tai hang.

Re: St. Paul Co-ed

Hi 03baby,
Do you think children can master Mandarin if they use it only in school time? Why u said ' not sure if it's a right choice for mandarin'? I'm also wondering whether is it a right choice for my BB!!
I did concern more about Mandarin than English my BB does not have any contact with Mandarin. Now, she can understand little English and Cantonese. I hope she can master Mandarin in PN.

Hi, fatping1,
St. Paul Convent is a girl school. However, it didn't have Native English teacher and Mandarin in Nursery. If u want your child to go to St. Paul Convent Primary, u should enroll for the nursery. My sister (she is a teacher in a school that have close relation with St. Paul Convent) told me that ST. Paul Convent accept more children in St. Paul nursery rather than St. Paul Kinder. ---I don't know whether it is ture or not but most of her colleguage's children (girls) go to St. Paul Nursery.

Re: St. Paul Co-ed

Of course it's better to have the same language environment. That's why all the sch recommends Cantonese class. It's easier to communicate to both your daughter and her teacher. And I will have to learn all the mandarin songs too!

But surprisingly my daughter understands the mandarin teacher's instructions. She even said "1 2 xxx" in mandarin during lunch today. I've no clue what is the "xxx". Sounds like english to me

Re: St. Paul Co-ed

Gisele,

Gisele,

I think you are a BH fan!

Maybe I could share with you my experience 2 years ago.

I heard that BH had a lot of students going to St Paul Co-ed and other good primary schools and other than that I had no knowledge on BH wehn I applied for it.

Eventually my son got accepted right away on the interview date and I had to pay immediately so I didn't have time to really think about it.

The school premises were small and facilities were old.  The "classroom" was only partitioned and surely you could hear other kids' crying sound.

The toilet was stunning - it's OPEN and boys and girls could see each other well!   It's situated in the middle of the premises and you won't miss it.

My son's teacher was caring but the principal and vice principal were snobbish.    The latter always comment on the kids' clothings eg, you socks matched your T-shirt, your dress is very nice etc etc.  I think any school should not place emphasis on the outlook.

Finally I found out that the prinicipal is very picky in choosing the kid re background, which is similarly a crucial factor in getting into the elite primary school.  Mummies are often "full-time" and spend their time in queuing up outside BH together with their drivers and helpers (I remember one mummy who brought 2 helpers and 1 driver EVERYDAY!).

Of course, having said that I must admit that the academic standard of BH is very high.  If the facilities and the fees are not a concern for you, BH offers quality academic education in both English and Chinese though I think the families also play a very important role.

Things might have changed by now since my son quited.

Good luck!

Re: 寶山幼稚園

Dear Chole,

Thanks so much for your information!!

Yes, I am a fan of BH, just as I am a very big fan of St. Paul Co-ed!!

I know the environment of the nursery is so-so, if not poor, in the eyes of some parents.  So I am very eager to know where it will be moving.

I know no one would like that principal…but I think it is a nursery that appears to cater for our need, otherwise I may have to send my son to two kinders in a day.  My only concern is that some of the kids are super rich, and my son may feel bad about it…

By the way, which kinder or school did your son switched to?

Re: 寶山幼稚園

Dear Gisele,

You're right, some of the kids are super rich and I have seen some celebrities in some gatherings.   It is not only the matter of school fees but the overall atmosphere.

I am not exaggerating but:

transport:
1.  many of the kids have drivers
2.  most of the mums drive their kids to BH but there is parking problem.  Another mum told me that that's why she needed a driver
3.  some kids take taxi (usu with tse tse)
4.  well, you don't want to be seen to take minibus/bus

lai-see/gifts:
I heard that these are necessary (also said by some BK mamas) but I didn't know at that time

birthday parties:
sorry, must not be McDonald / Pizza Hut.  Find some professional orgainzers

Mamas:
pls carry your Chanel/ BV etc and at least one carat of diamond at each ear

I am sure that there are many many happy BH mamas but not me.  My son is now in a Catholic kinde which stresses no fancy clothes, environmental protection etc.  Majority of the parents are above average middle class but BD parties are mostly in McDonald and trust me, kids like it!

Anyway, other K1 will be happy to admit kids from BH nursery so you may give it a go.

Cheers,

Chole

I have previously asked my neighbour, she said she is doing fine with the other mummies – it appears that mummies of the same type will get together.

You are so lucky now that you have found a kinder that suits your kid – if you don’t want to disclose it here could you PM me the name of that kinder please?
