ESF foundation school students learn Spanish, French or German (German is only available in some school like KGV) from Year 7.

In Year 7 & 8, it is compulsory for students to pick up a third language but from Year 9 onwards it is optional. Year 9 students have 3 hours per week for native languages Chinese, Japanese or Korean (the latter 2 for native speakers only) and 2 hours per week Spanish/French if they opt for dual language (on top of English). Those students would do 1 instead of 2 creative subjects like drama, art, media, music, etc.

Some students from Year 10 onwards may continue to do 3 languages, most would only do 2. Quite a number of students would drop Chinese and do Spanish/ French for IGCSE (will be replaced by MYP in 2-3 years) and IB, as they can do Spanish/ French at the beginner level instead of doing Chinese A.
