I think the support from the family and the school is crucial to the ADHD kid.
He should learn how to focus on his work. If he could not focus, he could not receive what the teachers teach him. Family and the school community could assist him. After my son was diagnosed of ADHD, he was allocated a place in the special learning need. The teacher ratio was 1 to 3. The class was 1 hour per week and for half term. The homeroom master also assigned a buddy to him so that he could seek assistance from his buddy. For example, if he could not take notes, the buddy would share his with my son. If he did not remember to take note of his tasks and hand in the homework, the buddy would reminder him.
At Grade 11, he took medicine according to the suggestion of the doctor. It worked on him. His academic result improved. Given his low GPA, it was difficult for him to apply for good US colleges.
We understand that UK colleges are more lenient to the students with learning disability because they have anti-discrimination acts (though I do not know the contents). If you read the webpage of the well known colleges, usually they have an office to support such students (if admitted). For example, they would assign a lecturer as your personal tutor to follow up on your work. In dormitory, they would ensure that you would take medicine as prescribed by the doctor. As far as examinations are concerned, the students of learning disability would have "special treatments". For example, during the examination, the students could take rest, eat and drink as they like. Once they put the pen down, the examination time will stop to count. When they commence writing again, the clock then runs again. If the examination time is 3 hours, they have 3 hours of writing as normal students but if you count the rest time involved, the examination time allocated to the students may be 6 hours or even more, but he is allowed to write 3 hours.
Once he is accustomed to learning and the way to interact with his peers and teachers, his academic performance would improve. The improvement would reinforce his confidence in his study. To be honest, we did not know whether he could survive the first year law study at a competitive college. However, once he could survive the first year, he mastered the way of learning law. He voluntarily requested to stop taking medicine several months after he was in the college. Probably, he had the confidence to overcome his difficulty with the need of medicine. He managed to obtain an LLB with result strong enough to compete for a place of PCLL in Hong Kong.
My personal observation is that once the ADD or ADHD kid knows his problem and his personal way to overcome it, he will be successful.
Believe me, patience, care and love are the necessary ingredients to help the ADD or ADHD kids to become normal.
My two cents.
