How do you ask a 27 months child to look out the phonetic symbols in the dictionary?

I do not want to be impolite but you really need to know what IPA is (and other phonetic courses) before you choose the right one for your child.

今日DR. LAI來我公司講TALK, 真係獲益良多, 如來我地講的英文係咁難聽, 希望我地的下一代唔會再學錯!

有IPA的資料PM比我啦!

我初初唔知係好野來GA, 諗住聽下咋, 初時以為會好悶

點知好精彩~

DR LAI係呢方面的專家, 主要係講點樣可以講英文時似NATIVE SPEAKER, 原來因為我地用講廣東話的發音來講英文(口音), 好多錯音, 所以好多以英語為母語的人都唔係好知我地講咩! 好似外國人學廣東話都會有口音一樣~

我有一份NOTES, 如有興趣可以PM E-MAIL比我~

咁啱係書局見到 Georgina Fettes 出嘅 IPA kit; 買左 set ... 比自己睇

DR LAI都有一本叫"IPA for age 1-101"附有CD, 可以比大人同細路用, 我訂了一本比囡囡用!

昨晚先買, 只睇過少部分; 幾易讀, 不過應該適合大朋友多D.
The book "IPA and Pronunciation for Asian Learners of English", including 3 CDs and a demonstration VCD, is priced at $168. 三聯中華現正做緊 pre-summer sale 有 15% off. 有雞雞咭買多少少野重可以有多 5% off.

Thanks for the notes. Have got a bit interested in Dr Lai's interpretations as well; will have a look at her books when I come across with any.

其實你可先自己找一下有關資料再 discuss. IPA 唔係 phonics course; 而且題目係 "..小學生而設的IPA.."喎.
想講呢樣野好耐, 不過自己未夠班; 如有錯漏 , 懇請各位提點

:

Phonics - 拼音法 - 通常指根據字o既結構和一些 rules 去 "讀" 英文字 (或者反過來幫助串字), 例如 "cut" 字, "c" is a "hard c" 發 /k/ 聲, "u" 發 /^/ 聲, "t" 發 /t/ 聲 so we get the /k^t/ sound. There are other rules like "silent e", "double consonent", etc. 不過學 phonics 唔一定需要學 symbols (e.g., IPA); 可以係 story-based, rule-based, whatever the way it works. 不過用 phonics techniques 讀字亦可能會錯, 因為有不少 exceptional cases (所以最好都係查字典 to confirm).

Phonetics - 語音學 - study about how sounds are made (tongue position, etc) - phonics 時常被誤會(或誤寫作)為 phonetics

Phonology - study of organization of sounds into meaning language(s)

Linguistics - the scientific study of language in general - including sub-fields like: phonetics, phonology, morphology, etc.

IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) - 國際音標, 大家查字典見到果 D 蟲仔 (e.g., /ei/ for the alphabet letter "a") - 簡化地講, 每個 symbol 代表一個聲. IPA is a number of alphabets/symbols that represent some particular sounds; 可用於表示不同語言之發音(including 廣東話). 字典通常用 IPA (or its derived set) 或其他音標系統表示發音.

不過我自己覺得小朋友適合學 phonics 多 D (都可以有好正o既發音), 我自己牛龜咁大先學懂少少 pronunciation.

Agree with 510 that "不過我自己覺得小朋友適合學 phonics 多 D (都可以有好正o既發音)".

It's simple and easy to pick up for kindergartern and junior primary school children.
