有點題外話想請教各位, 我女一直讀直資, 今年九月將升讀IBDP, 她一向成績好, 我們也計劃讓她到海外升讀大學, 美國是目標之一. 問題是, 聽說報美國一流大學, 最好考SAT, 甚至有人說考SAT還不夠, 還要另外考起碼兩科SAT 2. 這樣一來, 要讀IB已經夠忙了, 還要預備其他考試, 是否會得不償失, 影響最終的IB成績?

My girl in IB grade 11 is indeed very busy with all the classes, EE, TOK, ec, and needs to prepare ACT too. We indeed have no time to prepare for any subject tests.
For students concentrating on humanities, you have to hand in many essays, do many presentations, etc.
For students concentrating on Science, you have to spend a lot of time on lab reports which are not very straight forward but requires a lot of analysis.
It is indeed a lot of work if you do IB and aiming for US universities which uses ACT and SAT to rank students.
But it is indeed possible to do the subject tests too depending on which subject you are taking. Many classmates are indeed taking subject tests as some universities require them.

唔好意思, 我真係唔識, 咁如果唔考SAT, 單靠IB分數, 係咪對申請美國一流大學既機會有影響?

而且, 我都未搞明白. 有好大疑問, 申請香港或英國既大學, 用既係IB predicted grades, 而香港同英國既大學, 出offer時都係俾conditional offer, 等到成績出左, 達標就可以. 但申請美國既大學, 每年3, 4月就出offer, 而且聽聞係出unconditional offer, 咁美國既大學單靠IB predicted grades就可以決定到收生? 抑或其實美國既大學都唔係全部出unconditional offer, 其實都有部份conditional offer?

美國唔出 conditional offer, 佢地主要睇high school 成積，還有一定睇SAT 或 ACT 分數。因為每年大學都要公報已收生的平均GPA 及 SAT/ACT, 這些直接影響大學排名，所以 GPA 及 SAT/ACT 比 IB predicted score 重要。
如果要入美國頂尖大學，SAT / ACT 一定要考及要考得高分。

有一些網站可以 check 到每一間大學收生的要求及平均GPA/SAT/ACT，例如 prepscholar 網站。

My point is exactly, moving down to MS may not help much. Some universities simply do not like MS. A 6 in MS may not be better than 4 in M SL.
I suggest students apply to HK or UK universities with MS. There r more success stories for MS students in Hk & UK.

樓主可去本地大学information day 或英國大學展向心儀學校問清楚, 我大女也讀math studies, 決定前已問過, 知道讀math studies局限, 但這科真不是她interest, 現實上用IB 成績考香港和英國大學先看總分, 再看subject choice

Each case must be considered on its own merits. However, some general observations are listed for reference:

. MS if really weak in Math
. Math SL if confident in getting a good grade
. MS if applying for undergrad prog not requiring Math while other prerequisite (HL) subjects are tough and their exam dates are close to and/or in consecutive days with Math SL

Don't waste too much time on ACT/SAT2, etc. if the applicant doesn't have a green card. Unconditional offers may be obtained from tier 2/3 US universities (could even be bundled with full funding/scholarship) for bright IB students without ACT/SAT2 which can be a good complement with other U applications normally giving only conditional offers as the student will have some peace of mind BEFORE his/her exam.
