作為中國人，當然應該識中文。唔識中文比較難在香港生活。至少中文還是英文緊要，如果從career path來說，應該是英文比較緊要。現實中，大學畢業計，英文好但中文慬慬識講及寫都可以揾到好工。但英文不好只有中文標菁，應該難找工。

比較少接觸而家香港青年人的英文，吾知係也野水準，但希望吾會差過馬來西亞，因為佢地真係吾係好

我係新加坡工作，普遍接觸既馬拉人，一般英語程度比香港好，不過可能部分係新加坡生活時間長，習慣用英語溝通，當然有重口音及文法未必啱，但至少能溝通到，反觀香港既年青人，未必個個肯開口用英語溝通。

Very true that the environment does matter a lot.  The environment in Singapore is a lot more competitive than in Malay, whether it's Indians or Chinese or Malay, they have to keep themselves stay competitive.  English is the only universal language in Singapore, obviously ppl with inadequate English fluency is of less advantage.
In HK, the society is comparatively more homogeneous, Cantonese is the main language, furthermore, the learning environment in local schools less encourage students to speak freely (not even in their mother tongue)  Unless students study in int'l schools, otherwise local students in HK truly lack the environment to speak English.  Those more fluent speaking local schools students do usually brought up in an environment where their parents speak fairly good English and speak quite often.

Back to the question, my opinion is from the perspective of making a living in major cities, English is still the more essential language than Chinese.  From the perspective of getting into the top uni and the most elite faculties in HK, students should be able to obtain top scores in Chinese.  I don't see in the forseeable future, how Chinese can replace English yet on international standing.  But if one wants to tap into the market in China, possessing fluency in both language obviously gives you extra advantage.  However, even in the latter case, I believe since HK ppl can't beat mainlanders' Chinese, as such I still believe even more fluent in English will give one extra advantage because that's one of the key characteristics distinguished yourself from Mainlanders.
