80% Chinese? Far from my expectation!  Even more than RC?? Hk or Mainland? I thought there were many ...
I am not surprised, coz there are many "locals" with canadian passports.  Like HIHinsurance said, I do believe most of them speak English at home and among themselves.  Is it difficult for non-Canadian passport holders to acquire a spot for the preparatory level entry (5 years old)?

No many schools have a breakdown of student ethnicity. Probably because this can stir up discomfort of parents, feeling the school is biased towards a certain ethnic group. The 80% Chinese student thing can really be true. Many ethnic chinese students have foreign passport. In any case, I think it is also hard to tell whether anyone is Chinese or Korean by looking at his name.

Regarding RC, they are not counting nationality but the right of abode. 70% of the students have to be "local students". And the definition of "local students" mean those that have a hk id card. That can include ethnic indian, japanese, korean or even families from england that have lived here long enough. My neighbour is a korean family with children born in Hong Kong. The whole family have hk id card and their 2 sons are at RC.

CDNIS in-take & class size by grade:
Pre-Reception: 40(new in-take)  [20 x 2 classes]
Reception: 40(existing) + 80(new in-take)  [20 x 6 classes]
Preparatory: 120(existing) + 0(new in-take)  [20 x 6 classes]
Grade 1: 120(existing) + 5(new in-take)  [25 x 5 classes]...

In the past Prepatory was 25 per class, but the school realized the class size is quite big and have cut it back to 20 per class. I heard that the school does want to make all class sizes smaller to improve the quality, so try to get in ASAP. A fellow parent with 3 boys, 2 already in CDNIS, had difficulty getting her middle child into Prep. She finally succeeded this term (2nd semester of Grade 1), and that's because 2 students pulled out in Grade 1. There were 3 applicants (all with sibling priority) waiting for those two spots so the school still had to interview all 3 candidates.

I shall PM you if that's okay.

Latest update as of 3rd March 2015, there has been a change of class quantity and class sizes in the lower kindergarten grades starting the 2015-16 school year--

Pre-Reception: 80(new in-take)  [20 x 4 classes]
Reception: 80(existing) + 28(new in-take)  [18 x 6 classes]

I just don't want anyone one reading this thread to obtain incorrect information.

CDNIS: 50-60% ethnic Chinese in lower grades, perhaps more in higher grades?

Not my kids' school. Don't know.
But does it really matter?
Why are people so obsessed?
As far as I know, CDNIS is an english speaking school, teaches in english and most (if not all) students speak fluent english. And it is using a non-local curriculum.
Even if 100% are asians or chinese, it is not going to matter. At least not to me.

HIH mentioned it just once in his long post, but people keep going back to the figure and believing it to be true. I have a kid there and repeatedly rectified the number. My only obsession is showing the correct data :)

回覆:jolalee 的帖子

The tongue in cheek stereotype would be the expat who secretly wishes there are less Chinese in their IS cohort and the super local parents who want to stuff their kid into a blonde hair blue eyed IS (no brunettes don't count lol),  just like their "NET"s in the kindy need to be a foreigner

Anyway in all seriousness, this is an ethnically Chinese city, it's a numbers thing, that's all there is to it.
