Re: study in UK
thanks for sharing, bau.
i agree that sending kids overseas for boarding immedately after primary schools is indeed a bit too early. But i know of some friends whom were being sent to UK boarding after P5 or P6 or F.1. maybe can share some of their stories.
They all attended local HK primary schools before leaving for UK-- eg Maryknoll, DGJS, HK wahyan. They went to Headington, Malvern, Wycombe Abbey, Stonyhurst etc.
They returned to HK every holiday, some even during the 1 week half term. Their relationship with family are very strong.
You worried about "losing your girl esp when she falls in love with a guy"-- if you sent her to a decent and good unisex school, i think this won't be a problem. Girls studying in these schools are quite decent and virtually they do not have any chances of meeting many guys.
their career: 2 solicitors, 2 doctors, 1 pharmacist (3 of them now working in HK)
I would say that their basic chinese is still OK. Most of them have got married. Only 2 married british guys. But they do come back to HK once every year/2 years.
For those who went boarding after F.3 F.4- of course their chinese level is pretty good. most of them eventually returned to HK and work.
I agree that parents have to put in more effort in keeping a closer relationship with the kids if planning to send kids there so young. Most importantly, find a good school. Ideal age to keep a balance between good english and chinese level (only my opinion) is probably 14 (after F.2). |
