If you ask, some schools will tell you some schools won't.
Some schools will keep applicants in the waitlist (except a few have been rejected for some reasons) and will do nothing until you are moving to the top.
Generally speaking, if you have passed the interview but not being granted a place, you are most probably on the top of the waitlist and may get an offer soon for Year 1 application.
If you have not yet gone through an interview and being placed in the waitlist directly, it may take a long time to wait.
While you are on the waitlist, Year 2 will be another chance to get an interview/offer, as some children may go back to local school (if they get a dream offer from local school). After that, only a few vacancies will be available in the coming year groups every year.
Sorry for not giving you the answers you want but only thing you can do is to call the schools directly.
