其實要多謝TVB..很多人來香港之後快速學廣東話的途徑之一就是靠看TVB的劇集學廣東話的.

I do not deny that children in HK should be able to speak Cantonese even though without teaching at schools. My concern is there should be at least one language which the kid is confident at so that he/she can express himself/herself well. I think the key is the confidence in communicating with the others in the society, but not only family members. Therefore, if you observe your kid is strong at communication, trilingual shouldn't be bad.

I may not be so concerned about this if my kid is a girl. Since boys are usually slower in language development, I am cautious not to push my boy too early. I may however try Miriat's approach if mine is a girl who is generally more outspoken!

我都覺得匪夷所思，兩公婆都講廣東話，但同個仔講英文。
個仔又真係冇渠道學廣東話噃。幾㱑人仔點會要出去應付日常生活所需呢？響屋企就係同賓賓溝通，番學係英普。
其實呢種家庭係十多年前好普遍，當時好重視英文，覺得廣東話冇用。你哋唔係香港大所以唔知。
我本人就想兩文三語，廣東話一定要識，國語非常重要（因為屋企冇人識講）！基本上大跨國公司家下mandarin is a must. 英文因我老公係英文人所以唔擔心！

Ya, I guess English speaking helpers probably contribute to a different language exposure for the new generation. Maybe I don't see the same in my boy becoz his Cantonese speaking grandparents are his caretakers.

I share 晞晞爸b's view that most kids can change channels naturally, whereby I think 2 to 3 languages at one time is manageable. Having said that, I agree with you that it's not easy to have one strong language if the child needs to manage more than one language at a time, unless he/she is good at it by nature. Hence I will rather have my boy mastering a good command of English, over other languages. I don't deny my freaking high ranking of the importance of English is working, very personal indeed. In fact, I don't expect him to speak fluent Mandarin at this stage, and as a matter of fact for most kindergartens, Mandarin is probably just a supplementary language. I believe he can always pick that up at Primary school stage.

It's a choice, really, nothing right or wrong.

我成日有個錯覺: 除非我自己都係native..如果唔係既話..我好驚教出來既小朋友英文無論係口音或者英文用詞都會無咁正統及純正

所以即使我識英文都好我都唔敢用英文同我仔溝通.我寧願駛錢去俾D 真正既NET教..

我奶奶同老公都係講廣東話，得我同工人講英文，可惜我翻工時間長，每日只有3幾個鐘陪個囡，所以佢依家廣東話強好多。我自己讀英文中學，深知英文教學對英文程度有極大影響，我唔覺非母語教學會影響吸收知識，而依家中學生最大問題係怕講英文。至於普通話，我囡囡翻playgroup每次都有15分鐘，以為佢唔明，原來佢慢慢都學識左小小，我希望佢小學開始普通話學中文，加埋閱讀習慣，中文一定更加好。可能自己本身教書，比較緊張吧

我都困擾緊個仔係咪有confusion. 英文應該係佢 first language. 我阿爸阿媽同佢講廣東話，但夾雜英文。依家佢講chinglish

btw, if you target local school, cantonese is a must. from my friend's experience in K1 interview at the local 'dragon' kindergarten, they are all conducted in cantonese.
i started speaking to my boy in cantonese now!

I agree with you. That's why my husband and his mother teach my baby Cantonese. She can now say 你坐係果邊，唔可以，刷牙等等~~that's why i don't worry about the cantonese.
