Ya, I guess English speaking helpers probably contribute to a different language exposure for the new generation. Maybe I don't see the same in my boy becoz his Cantonese speaking grandparents are his caretakers.
I share 晞晞爸b's view that most kids can change channels naturally, whereby I think 2 to 3 languages at one time is manageable. Having said that, I agree with you that it's not easy to have one strong language if the child needs to manage more than one language at a time, unless he/she is good at it by nature. Hence I will rather have my boy mastering a good command of English, over other languages. I don't deny my freaking high ranking of the importance of English is working, very personal indeed. In fact, I don't expect him to speak fluent Mandarin at this stage, and as a matter of fact for most kindergartens, Mandarin is probably just a supplementary language. I believe he can always pick that up at Primary school stage.
It's a choice, really, nothing right or wrong.
