If you're referring to Singlish, yes, I doubt if many native English speakers could understand words ...
Have you listened to people say "three" in Singapore accent?  It is almost indistinguishable from "Tree". Same goes for all th sound.  Again I am not saying Singapore accent has a problem, or it is not understood by Native English speakers. Singapore obviously has far better English than HK in general.

minirat  Haaa!  Regarding "Three" and "Tree", not all Singaporeans (with Singaporean accent) have this problem, but I agree a portion of us does.  I do agree with you in general.  發表於 12-12-12 12:16
The more bizzare a thing is, the less mysterious it proves to be.

Well, from a woman point of view, I found people with a Liverpool accent very sexy.  I cant stand American English at all. Singapore accent, again no way!! But this does not mean Singaporeans speak bad English.  Its just their accent that I find it hard to like.  Accent is really a very personal thing... As Shaeslayer suggested English standard in Singapore is much better than that in Hong Kong. If someone is concerned about the Sing. accent, surelly he/she should not choose SIS in the first place.

minirat  I have to agree with you that preferences on accent is very personal and subjective.  發表於 12-12-12 12:15

Thanks for sharing your thought. Whether you should be concerned about an accent (be it Singaporean, American, Australian, British...) is personal. I would agree that how much a child picks up a certain accent from school highly depends on how much exposure the child has on this and other accents at school (at what age the child joins the school, language backgrounds of the child's teachers and friends) and outside of school (language backgrounds of the family and those who the child hangs out most with). There are far more things to consider than just the accent when choosing school - well here we don't really choose schools, we are chosen by schools :)

My opinion, over 4-5k thousand applicants for 100 seats at PY1 last year, in such a keen competition senerio, I think it would be more practical to consider after you are accepted.  While usually level of preference will subject to what choices do you have and what you are comparing to.

The truth is more and more Singaporeans living in HK now apply for the school and they have absolute rights to be admitted, and for the last year, it was said that about 60-70 were for them, so literally, only 30-40 were for available for thousands of local kids.....
