I have been reading up on CKY and trying to understand more about the school and its philosophy.  One thing that is especially attractive is its focus on reading.  Can a current parent help me with some of my questions on reading?

1)  Are most homework in lower primary reading?

2)  For grade 1, can the children read the Chinese books by themselves or is it supposed to be read by/with parents?

3)  How does the school bridge the gap between reading with parents and self-reading?  I would imagine for some lower primary students, they do not yet have the ability to read by themselves due to lack of vocabulary or comprehension  How do these students then complete their reading?  Is it by parents or do they make use of books with either pinyin or zhuyin?

4)  At what stage is hanyu pinyin or zhuyin taught?

5)  What are the typical Chinese books being read in Grade 1 and 2?  Are these picture, bridging or chapter books?

6)  What are the typical English books for G1 and G2?

Thank you for your help.

回覆:Questions on Reading and Chinese

Most student in year 1 can already read English book by themselves.  Many of them will have still have difficulty reading long Chinese book, due to lack of vocab.  As parent, if you find your kids cannot read the reading scheme book, you can read with him/her.

There is no designated book level for all year.  It depends on the kids capability. They will choose the right book for themselves.

Try to answer some of them and please correct me if not

1)  Are most homework in lower primary reading?
Not only reading, but worksheet, handwritting and workbooks etc though the workload is not very tough in P.1,

2)  For grade 1, can the children read the Chinese books by themselves or is it supposed to be read by/with parents?
They are given different levels of books, for some alpha books, they need to read to the parent, for higher levels, parent can read with them. Other than that, they have theme books for lessions.

It depends on individual levels.

4)  At what stage is hanyu pinyin or zhuyin taught?
PTH class starts in P1 but Chinese will be still taught in Cantonese in P.1

5)  What are the typical Chinese books being read in Grade 1 and 2?  Are these picture, bridging or chapter books?
The theme books in Chinese in P1 are mostly pictures but reading scheme books varies and the child can select their own.

6)  What are the typical English books for G1 and G2?
Similar as above, but more chapter books can be selected in English

Thank you for your help.
