The transportation is so expensive in the UK. The best travel card is indeed your visa/master.

There is no universal stored value card like octopus in HK.
Some local transport companies have their own stored value cards (eg Oxford bus company) but the use is severely limited and I guess they are not suitable to you.
Day pass/week pass may be able to serve your purpose.
