I know there are three P2 classes. But, how many different classes/levels of Chinese in KCIS P2?

2 levels in P2.  Chinese class is harder and Mandarin class is easier.

Thanks for your reply. Does it mean two Chinese classes and one Mandarin class? or the other way around? I think as the size of KCIS student body is growing rapidly, it could be viable to have three levels of Chinese programs. ESF, Cdnis, ICS, GSIS streamed students into at least three levels.

Each class divided into 2 levels.  One is Chinese class and the other is Mandarin class.

Start from P4 or P5, each class will be divided into 3 levels.

Hi Yau-Cheung,

Does it mean that students of different Chinese levels in each class are being taught by the same Mandarin teacher? Are there small groups within the same class and each group is being led by a dedicated teacher? How does it actually work?

P2時，老師會將每班(e.g. P2K) 小朋友分為2組，中文程度高的會入Chinese class，中文程度較低的會入Mandarin class。

由於每班Chinese class人數不少 (以小兒 P2 時 class size 21人，有16人在Chinese class，只有5人在Mandarin class)，所以並不會與其餘2班 P2(e.g. P2N & P2W) Chinese class 的小朋友一齊上堂。換言之，上中文課 (Chinese class) 時只有16人。

Mandarin class 由於只有5人，會否join 其餘2班 P2 Mandarin class 一 同上堂就不太清楚，可向學校查詢。

以我瞭解，Chinese class 小朋友程度雖然相約，但中文老師亦表明有高、中、低程度的學生。老師明言，會以中等程度授課，不會遷就程度特別高或低的小朋友；程度高的小朋友若較快完成堂課，可在課堂閱讀中文書；程度低的小朋友亦可考慮轉至 Mandarin class。但多數情況是由 Mandarin class 轉至 Chinese class。

P.S. 由於 P2(=year 2) 起已使用同齡 local school 的中文書 (local P1)，year 3 用 local school P2中文書，如此類推；加上 KCIS 中文教學方法與 local school 相約，包括抄寫詞語、抄寫課文、閱讀理解、作業、閱讀報告、默書、背默、工作紙 (e.g. 重組句子、選詞填空等)、每年2次考試，所以中文程度在 International school 中算是非常不俗，與 local school 英小相約。

Thanks for your reply. Apart from the daily 50 mins of Chinese lesson, are any classes being conducted in Mandarin? I also had some confusions about this.

I am also wondering whether KCIS will stream students of differing maths abilities into different classes. I know that there are different views (pros/cons) on streaming of maths classes especially in early school years.

有家長告知數學及英文亦會根據小朋友能力分枱。

除中文課堂外，其餘課堂均是全英語授課；小息可用英語/普通話溝通，小兒那班較常以英語溝通，亦有少數班別較常用普通話溝通。

Yau_Cheung, thanks so much for your detailed explanation about KCIS's chinese lessons.  I m a newly joined KCIS parent.  I m very satisfied in all aspects of the school except a bit worry about the Chinese standard at KCIS's primary.  If KCIS uses texbooks as the same level in local school, then, my worry is very much relieved.

Can u also let me know:
(1) time slot for the daily Chinese lesson ?
(2) frequency of homework ?
(3) frequency of dictation and composition ?
(4) any story book reading program ?

Thanks a lot.

(In fact, i have recently asked the above questions by email to Ms Wyatt of KCIS, but she didnt reply me....)

(2) frequency of homework ? - 每天，即星期一至五均有功課
(3) frequency of dictation and composition ? - 每星期/每2星期1次
(4) any story book reading program ? - 有閱讀報告需要完成，但老師沒有指定書籍/提供書籍，家長可自行到圖書館借閱合適小朋友程度的中文書籍。
