Re: 比較 瑪利諾(MCS) / St Mary / Good Hope
哈里波特: Back to your original question.
The workload of SMCC is very high. They probably have the most homework among all the secondary schools which I have seen. If a student falls behind, it's quite hard to catch up.
Their teaching ability is so-so. The standard is tuned to the best students in class. If the student is not one of them, she will have five tough years ahead of her. (not many students belong to that category.) They use foreign English textbooks, which is quite common among better schools. Other textbooks are more or less the same as other schools (Ling Kee, Oxford, Canotta). Good Hope and DGS use a lot of textbooks from Manhattan, which are more difficult. One interesting fact to tell: this year's F.5 is still using a Maths textbook which is quite outdated (it's like a 1990 edition). The syllabus has changed a lot and they are still using it. It is much more difficult than what the present syllabus requires. The result: the best students get better; the average students can't learn anything. They don't know how to do the difficult problems in the textbook. But they don't know how to do the simplest problems either. Fortunately another textbook was finally chosen for the new syllabus this year. F.4 students this year are luckier.
The school said that 3/4 of their HKCEE students last year got credit or above in English. That's remarkable.
In lower forms, exams are always difficult. Many students can't finish their papers within the given time. I have done their papers myself and their lengths are quite unreasonable. I don't agree with that practice. Exams are meant to assess how much a student knows, not how fast a student can write.
One good thing the school has done this year is to abolish the first organized test for F.1 students. This provides more time for the F1 students to accustom to the new environment.
The school authority doesn't make a great effort in encouraging students to take part in extra-curricular activities (as opposed to the other three schools mentioned in this discussion). She loses a lot of points in this category in my ranking.
Wow. I can't believe how much I have written on this school. Hope this helps. |
