Nearly all books in the ORT series are independent.

In the higher levels, stage 6 and above, some stories are too long and have to be told in 2 books eg The Stolen Crown Part 1 & 2 (Stage 6).

You can skip the stage 1 wordless books. Some choose to start with Stage 1 Phonics, Oxford Story Tree Stage 1 or ORT Stage 2. These have words.

Perhaps you check them out at the library first?
