小兒讀名英中，中三，相信係Band One 尾。
想報下年 UK Yr 10。
以下三所rank 100-200的學校，請問有人有個人意見或多些資料提供嗎？
比如有冇朋友讀過、照顧如何、難考入嗎、成績、多唔多HKers等。

1. Bromsgrove
2. Shrewsbury
3. Epsom

如有其它學校推介，請留言，萬分感謝！

For Shrewsbury, I know two boys studying here from Grade 12 about 6 years ago and both boys were admitted by Cambridge. They highly recommended this school.

If you apply through agency, there are so many good schools worth studying. The comments from those students studying in high ranking schools are that the schools place strong emphasis on academics and there are many assessments and homework.

For the entrance tests, it tests English, Maths & science. My son said that the entrance tests were very easy.  You can go to Oundle web site to download the sample test papers or request the schools you applied to give you sample past papers for reference.

A friend of mine has tried to find a place in UK boardind schools for her son in Yr 10. Most of the schools replied that there are no place. Did your child start in Yr. 10 or 9. Any recommendations or tips for seeking a better school from Yr. 10? Or she better waits for the Yr.12 entry ? TY.

I only started to study the ranking of boarding schools and applied for boarding schools for Grade 10 not only until last December. I only targeted for those schools with rankings from 50 to 200.

I don’t know the tips for guaranteeing a place for a better school cos my son’s application for Grade 10 was also rejected by more than 10 schools.

I think the chance for admitting to top notch schools depends on the student’s school report and entrance test results.

I would recommend starting boarding from yr 9 by which the students can fully adapt to UK school life and the chance for admitting to a high ranking school is greater.

If you start to apply until Grade 12, the admission requirement is very high which may require the student with at least 3A3B or above in HKCEE for those top notch schools.

Maybe your friend tries to apply as many schools as possible to seek for higher chance for admission. Good Luck!

Oh I think I need to try more schools to secure a place for my son then.
Is it true that for boarding schools ranking top 200, the differences among boarding schools is not that much when referring to learning atmospher, pastoral care, etc?
I had meet some of the schools representatives in the UK Expo offered by academic asia, but I can not tell their major differences except rankings, school fees.
They all said that their schools have very good care of the students, and lots of opportunities in Art and Music.
So maybe I should try more schools.

Any folks have comment on the folllowing schools?
1. Bishop's Storford College (seens lower in school fees)
2. Dauntsey
3. Leys
4. Catherham

According to my experience and chatting with my friends, I think that there is some difference among different ranking boarding schools.

Friend A: Studying in the top 50 ranking school:
About 4% Chinese in the school and only 2 Chinese in the girl's boarding house. Compulsory sports and music. The house discipline is highly organized : the headmistress would confiscate the mobile phone and notebook after bedtime on 9:30 pm. The workload here is much more than the girl used to be in HK. Many assignments and assessments every week and the girl even spares no time to go to toilet during prep time. Even half term break, there are over 20 assignments. The school would spare no effort to give extra tuition to the girl for girl’s weak subjects and the senior students would coach the junior students the interview and exam technique.

Friend B: Studying in the top 100 ranking school:
About 4% Chinese in the school but amounts to nearly 85% Chinese in the boarding house since there is only 1 boarding house in the school. Compulsory sports and music. Good discipline and moderate level of homework. Assessments once a month.

Friend C: Studying in the top 150 ranking school:
About 25% Chinese in the school and boarding house. Compulsory sports and music. Good discipline and moderate level of homework. Assessments once a month. Not much homework and the students here are quite happy.

Friend D: Studying in the top 300 ranking school:
About 30% Chinese in the school but amounts to 50% Chinese in the boarding house mainly come from mainland. Loose discipline in the boarding house and most students do not pay attention to studies. Compulsory sports and music. Assessments once a month. Not much homework and the students are quite happy. This friend eventually changed school for his son to some 200 ranking school.

Though the above examples are not conclusive, it seems that the school with rankings within 50 does have excellent discipline, learning atmosphere and pastoral care. For privacy issue, may I keep silent on the names of above 5 schools. Thx.

i had fds fr Leys and Broomsgrove too.

think Broomsgrove's got a lot of chinese \ asian students...

i visited The Leys school quite a few times, not bad at all ^_^

Should I try some more schools of even lower rankings or stay for the 334 without his favourite choices of subjects in F.4?
Thank you for sharing the disappointment of me at this stage.

If you want to try for schools just outside the top 200, check out the following schools:
Clifton College
Cheltenham College
Dean Close School
Downside School
Alternatively, try somewhere further afield,eg Scotland, where there may be less competition from Hong Kong students - Fettes College in Edinburgh would be a good choice.
P/S These are all co-educational schools.

試多幾間啦! 揾返啲冇咁top o既應該容易啲的. 如果IV form唔過, lower sixth先過的話, 仲難考入呀!
