請問 GCE, GCSE, IGCSE (London 同 Cambridge), IELTS 的分別

以英文科計, 邊隻最淺 / 深 ?

用途 / 認受性 / 普及性有什麼分別 ?

是不是它們程度都在 PET / FCE/ CAE(Cambridge) / 之上 ?

初中生, 應考那隻較適合 ? (轉校用)

GCE O-Level replaced by IGCSE.
GCSE - exam to be taken in U.K.
IGCSE - exam to be taken by candidates outside U.K. (e.g. HK)
IELTS - an exam for English only

If you are thinking of educational purpose, IGCSE is more suitable. Universities of HK (& everywhere) accept them as formal qualification on par as HKCE. Both Cambridge & London (Edexcel) are more or less same in hardness.

IGCSE English 2nd Language is roughly same level as FCE (B2 of CEFR Scale) or IELTS 6.0
IGCSE English is roughly between CAE (C1 of CEFR Scale) or IELTS 7.5
I would say 初中生 getting a C or above in IGCSE ESL is already quite good, unless you are aiming for a super-school.

Hi,How can we take the tests of IGCSE /IELTS ? we got yhr result of the Cambridge FCE,
should go for CAE? Or should try IGCSE/IELTS?

Hi vvwawa,

Nice to hear that you have got the result of FCE. May I know the age of your child and his/her grade in FCE? PM me if you do not want to make it public info.

If you kid is still in lower Sec., then it would be better to go for IGCSE ESL. You can register with HK Exam Auth. to take the exam in Jan or May/June. If you can get good result in FCE, then you can probably get at least B or A in IG.

Thank you for your reply. ( sorry i don't know how to PM)
She was 9 when she took the exam. She gets B only (needs 1 more mark to get A).
I am thinking to try some other test. How about your daughter? Did she take any
other exam after FCE?

Hi vvwawa,

You have a very bright girl. So, how old and what grade is she now?

My girl took the IGCSE Math & Eng ESL last year, and she is planning to take the SAT in coming June (October is the June schedule clashes with her school exam).

Seeing that your girl is still young, CAE & IELTS seems to be too mature fr her now. If her Math is also good, you may consider SSAT.

she is in pr 4 now.
So what is the different between IGCSE and IGCSE ESL? And also do u have to take more than 1 subject? Can i enrol her at HK exam auth myself ? And what is SSAT? Sorry for so many question.

Hi vvwawa,

Sorry for causing the confusion. My girl took IGCSE Math & IGCSE English as Second Language (i.e. ESL). She is planning to take some more subjects in 2013.

You can take any number of subjects and register with HKEA yourself.

SSAT ( Secondary School Admission Test) http://www.ssat.org
has 2 levels. The lower is for grade 5-7 & the upper is for grade 8-11. It tests math, English reading & verbal.

Oic, thanks peremum.
May i know your child's grade in FCE and IGCSE, ESL and how old is she now? As u mention eariler that they may be the same level (B2/C1?), so why don't u take another level instead?

My girl is 10 now. She wanted to take the IGCSE Eng 2nd Lang., because it is a more formal qualification and she is aiming for further study in UK. Also, my husband want her to branch out to other subjects, and not just concentrating in English. Moreover, it would be difficult for her to get good result in CAE or IELTS, since they cover areas of teenagers/adult issues.

FYI, her grades are FCE - B ; IGCSE Eng 2nd Lang - B ; IGCSE Math - A*

你地打算自修，定比小朋友出去學？
英數我應該比佢出去學，中文我自己教。

睇你想考什麼subject(s).  For my experience, we do not plan to take Chinese.  For English, she just do a lot of reading since as a toddler.  We tell her what are the available exam and let her choose when & what exam to take.  She has considered Cambridge ESOL, Pearson PTE, SSAT, IGCSE & SAT, and she chose CAmbridge over PTE.
For Math,  my husband started teaching her all the primary school Math during the summer vacation before P3.  He then let her try the P6 TSA and HKAT Eng & Math papers.  When he was satisfied that she has mastered the Math of this level, then he proceeded to the Math of S1 & S2 during her P3 year & subsequent summer holidays.  During the P4 year, he taught her the IGCSE Math and then she took the exam in June.

So, you see that we do not send her to tutorial school.  But one thing which is very important is that no matter what exam to take & when, you must make sure that it is what the kid want.  Never ask them to study something extra to their normal school work if they do not want to.

你女女好叻啊! 自修形式去考...

我未考過GCSE, 唔熟個課程; 老公就o係英國大, 但佢忙....
我見到有一間center, 有個課程係target一D gifted的小朋友, 公開試的成績考得非常好!
9-12歲考IGCSE的小朋友都拿不少A/A*
所以就考慮緊比個女去讀....
負責人話IGCSE其實唔難, SSAT就會深D... (我無記錯的話)

我女都係非常鐘意睇書, 中文&英文的閱讀和寫作都唔錯..
佢一直有讀kumon (呢版我唔討論kumon的好/壞, 對我女黎講就好有幫助), 中文目標係小四完成(中學課程), 英文&數學依家做緊初中課程...
我覺得都係差唔多時候比佢試下一D國際性的考試.
我問過個女, 佢都好想去考......

請問你有買PAST PAPER比女女做嗎?
黎緊復活節有時間, 我都想去英國文化協會睇下D資料/PAST PAPER...

I will let her try to do past paper first. If ok, enrol for the test. If not, wait until
she is ready.Will not take any class because i just want to check her English
level without any extra help(only through learning by school and reading by herself.)
