just pure happy reading together. you would see a surprise result when the time is right for him.

mattsmum,

I am really admire you that you can enjoy reading English books together with your kid (kids enjoy reading Chinese books are a lot easier in HK).

I can't find any books in HK to teach parents how to read English books with their children.  I can't get any good suggestion from my friends either.  I have to figure it out on my own.

A year ago, I don't have much confident to attract my daughter to read English books.  Now it seems ok.  But the problem is that although she can get fun from reading English books, she gets more fun from reading Chinese books.  That's why if she has the choice, she will choose Chinese.

Now, every evening, she reads books on both languages for half an hour each, then story time.  The reason why she reads English books is that she loves to be with me.  If I were not with her, she would prefer reading Chinese books.

Can you, or anybody suggest to me how to improve the situation?  Is there any books I can read to get some idea?

hi, eviepa,

my problem is contrary to yours, he would prefer reading english books if he got a choice. in his nursery time, he learned to recognize more english words than chinese charactors which are more complicated. chinese books do not have the vast variety /funny story/ various levels as english books as well.so I am trying hard to find good chinese books for him.

I think I just started naturally by getting those interesting books for him. eg, his lego books, he loves them so much that he would asked me to read and he readed by himself too. you can't find a chinese lego book! so finding something that interests him is, perhaps, the first step.

I got a lot of information telling parents how to teach kids to read but not specific as to read "chinese or english". (poor kids, they are espected to be good at both at such an age).

did you ever seach some really funny books for your girl? such as " babby books", "little witches"? maybe she then found that attractive.

Hi eviepa,

You already got some good advice from mattsmum.  Here is my further suggestion - I always turn to about.com for some quick tips on almost everything.  Here is what they say on how to encourage a young child to read: http://childrensbooks.about.com/cs/forparents/ht/encourageread.htm.  You may also find the discussions at Suite101 (http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/reading_for_kids) useful.  Take a look of the articles in the archive.  The following is a list of books that people say are good:

(1) "Teaching Kids to Read for Dummies" - I had a brief look of this book in a bookstore.  It's an easy to read book with some common sense suggestions.  Makes more sense to me than Glenn Damon's how to teach your babies do this and that series.

(2) Teach Them All to Read: Catching the Kids Who Fall Through the Cracks

(3) Read to Me: Raising Kids Who Love to Read

I hesitate to recommend "The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home", but somehow believe that you'll like it.  Be prepared for the "don't torture you kid" type of comments from people who see you reading it.

Like mattsmum's son, my girl also prefers English books to Chinese books.  Trying to arouse her interest in Chinese is a new task for me.  I recently found a bookstore in North Point (Reader's Bookshop, Shop C, G/F, 58 King's Road, there is a children corner on the upper floor) that carries some really nice Chinese children books.  I suggest that everyone looking for Chinese children books go and take a look.

Regards,
KC

Hi Everyone, something would like to share.
My daughter is now P.3. Fortunately she loves reading Chinese and English books. She is now capable to read both languages chapter books by herself. But to maintain her reading hobby, I still read books to her almost every night.
My concept was solely English books and video since she was 7 months old to P.1(the period a child starts to understand you and he/she stills listen to you). I chose only very nice illustration, good quality pictures and interesting books only. i.e fairy story, Barney's, Kippers, Pingu, Peter Ribbit and some naughty kids stories kids would love. Because my plan was to put her in Chinese medium kinder and primary, so she could learn Chinese at school anyway.
Why I'm doing that.....Before my child was born, I saw my relatives' kids that they were so resist of learning English when they'r in P. School. Since their parents thought kids could learn English from P.School. So they'd never really put much effort to let their kids exposed to English earlier. When their kids were getting more & more behind in the English classes, they felt discouraged..... So I determined to let my child to approach English as early as possible (before she could even talk)
English lesson in most local P. S. are boring, grammer and dictation only!
I am satisified with my experiment. My girl didn't resist Chinese, she learn it so naturally from school and friends. Except she always ask why the illustration of the Chinese story books' she saw them from schools are not pretty. Also I will only choose translated Chin story books for her, the other advantage is she gets arts sense and art appreciation from it. BTW, some books from Taiwan have very beautiful illustration too, so I will buy these books too.
But don't be discourage if your kids don't like reading. Start from the family, switch off TV, they'l gradually love it. Some day you will see the crop.
Now I just complain that she doesn't have much free time to read lots of books since she's in P.S. Even she is studying in a new concept DSS.
But it's alright, she's already build up a good hobby. Books, pencils and papers are the necessities in her bags when we are going out!
When kids love reading, their academic result will be satisified at school. Also I don't and never expect my kid to get an "A". If she gets "A" I'l buy her a gift, if not I still feeling alright and said "not bad".

This web site list almost all book stores in HK
http://www.hkwithkids.com/books.htm

Try Greenfield if you need to learn story telling tips. Eventhough I never join their progarms, but it sounds good though
http://www.greenfieldhk.com/

Thanks for all your sharing. I'm no Saint! Sometimes and always yell at my girl too when she's naughty and working slow. But I did learn a lot from this topic; Love and Encouragment comes first, I found it works and my home is more peacful now without my "SHOUTING", just my happy kid's laughting. Let's try!!!!

"bookstore in North Point (Reader's Bookshop, Shop C, G/F, 58 King's Road, there is a children corner on the upper floor)"

yes i got some chinese books from them when they were in the taikoo shing book show last month. looks like taiwan books are the one we should look for for kids who does not like to read chinese books. there are so many good books in taiwan web site but their postabge fee is too expensive.

i agree that the books we choose got to be of good quality in content and painting. as this is the first encourter of kids to the visual world.

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all your suggestions and sharings.  They are very good to my daughter and probably will benefit a lot of parents reading this forum.

I also want to share with you the following 2 websites containing on-line books - free of charge.

www.lil-fingers.com/games/index.html
a website with books and games for toddlers.  But may be a little boring for Primary 2 and up.

www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/storycircle/fairystories/jackbeanstalk/jack_s.shtml
A section of website under BBC.   It contains a lot of on line story books, games etc which suitable for primary kids.   My daughter likes to read/listen to/watch the books very much.

Hope that you will make the most of the above websites.

There is a good collection of the Oxford series at the Central library.  Go to the not for loan section (near the escalator), and you'll find a few sets of Oxford Reading Tree, Oxford Story Tree and the poems and plays supplements there.  My is girl is a big fan of Oxford Reading Tree.

Hi warrrren,

Thanks for your tips.  Today I went to Central Library and found that there wer a lot of not for loan books in English that exactly suited my daughter.

My girl is a big fan of Oxford Reading Tree either.  She can read by herself up to stage 9.  However it is very difficult to borrow books for ORT at my local library because they are really great books.  When I  spotted them I just borrow 1 from stage x and 1 from stage y and my daughter can't finish all the stages yet.

Now I know that there are a full collection waiting for my daughter.  It's great!

However as I mentioned earlier, my daughter prefers Chinese books than English books.  For Chinese books, she can read one or two hours non-stop.  However, I only dare to read English books with her for up to 40 minutes each time.  I don't know if she will feel bore for reading longer time in English.

Every time we travel to the Central Library and back home take us 1.5 hours.  And if my daughter goes there just to read English books for 40 minutes, it is not worthwhile.  For Chinese books, our local library has enough material for her.

Anyone can help me to solve the problem?

The Oxford Reading Trees are very "hot" items.  You may have to make reservation to get hold of the books you want.  Do try the online reservation system.  You can pick up the books at any public library.

Talk to your girl's teachers.  The school may well have a budget for a set or two.
